The one thing that WTBS cannot tolerate is anything that makes them look bad, especially to the rank and file. The Internet is attacting more and more lurkers and information that most Witnesses never new existed if available.

If people could "walk away" without being shunned, whether formally or informally, this religion would start crumbling. They rule by fear. Fear of losing your friends, or worse yet, your family. How many thousands of stories are on this board and others of inactive ones that are shunned by their family? If they can't get you by JC, they simply attach other labels like "spiritually weak" or "materialistic" or "bad association" to you, and people are guilted into at least informally shunning you.
It is very strange how senior members in the organization (who know full well what the facts are) insist that it's as simple as just "walking away". Do they assume it's easy for us to leave our families behind and never talk to them again for the rest of our lives? Do they think we're as heartless as they are? It's extremely bizarre, almost as though they are in denial of just how wicked the practice of shunning really is.
