New career at 30 - suggestions/ideas?

I'm in need of a career change, or at the very least a new job that I can make money at while I continue to work on computer related side-projects. I'm burnt as hell at computer programming, and being that I am self-taught and have very little corporate experience I am not looking into doing this anymore as it's all I've done as a career for the last 10 years.

Long story short, bad money crunch, no degree of any sort, a gamble to try and make my own business failed - so I need to find a new career or job. Searching the papers is somewhat dis-heartening so far.

Any ideas, suggestions, or advice for this daunting task of trying to find some way to keep from going bankrupt with a new job. Just so hard to think of what to do that actually pays decent and I could do without a degree :-(

Hi There,

I did all the burnout stuff for years too whilst also trying to raise a family as a lone parent, believing that I had to make as much money as I could to support everyone.

Last year it all came crashing down. I now work 16 hours a week as a PA for a lovely family with a severely disabled child. I have three days work and four for ministry and family. My life is rewarded so much more. I no longer can afford new clothes or a holiday, but I am happy knowing I am doing what is right for me and my family, most of all I can look at material things with different eyes and finally am regular at meetings and ministry.

It might not be right for everyone, but I will never look back at my old life with envy, just forward to a wonderful future.

I hope you find your solution.

The best i can think of is to look inside at what skills you have and that can be turned into an income.

Make stuff to sell. find a need and fill it.

People will always find a few hundred $ for want's even when they have not paid for their needs.

Bartenders make good money, as do wait staff in bars (TIPS, unless you're in AUS, where they don't tip). If you're healthy, and don't mind drunks, it doesn't require education.

Find several things that interest you--which shouldn't be too difficult if you do research online about something you think might be a candidate. Once you see something you think is a viable business opportunity or good training for a job opening, go for it. Just beware that, in many countries, regulations are increasingly making starting a new business more dangerous. And that includes one formerly free country that everyone in the world used to think of as the paragon of freedom.

Self-employment can be a good alternative. Especially if you want to fit work around College as well. Do you have any artistic talent or skills?

I worked for a guy once making heirloom quality victorian-age replica rocking horses. Each took about a week to build and sold for between US$4,000 and US$7,000 depending on the market. He exported 1/2 of them . . . the Asian wealthy loved them. Making a specialist product from home and marketing it through the internet can be very profitable . . . if you've got a skill, or some level of artistic talent.

I knew someone who went to the county (think it was general relief) they bought him clotheing, made resumes for him, paid for gas, etc. and they did find him a job, then he took the training from that job and went in business for himself and doing real well now. I was burnt out on my carrer because it was not doing well so I tried the general relief thing (big waste of time for me) just as well because my business has gotten better now and I have been buying equipment for something else in case hard times fall again.

I beleive maybe you could get a student loan and they will loan you enough to survive on while you go to school, and if you qualify you could even get a grant that you don't have to pay back. Could not hurt to check it out and go take the tests to see where your hidden talents lay...

Thanks for all the great feedback guys! Yes I would love to go back to college but there's no way I'll qualify for financial aid this year, as the first few months were really good. I'm wracked with debt that I'm trying to pay down, but with my business income dropping so bad I'm about a month away from not being able to pay the bills!
