We were made to answer the door and say "We don't celebrate". Imagine the reception we got! I wasn't any fun in the least. Eventually we left the lights off and just went to our bedrooms and watched tv.

We turned out all the lights, and I would sit in the dark in my bedroom window, which was on the front of the house. I loved it, the only holiday I actually got to observe. I'd sit there in the dark, watching all the kids in costume running around.
I still love it!! We live in an amazing neighborhood, hundreds of kids come around. I love to dress up. Hubby and I were Hillibillys this year, and we went to a party across the street, out in the front yard (80 degrees today). We left a note on our door saying come across the street. It was so fun to see them go up and read the sign and then turn around and see us waving.
Sigh.

"We have lots of jw's on our estate in Tamworth so we made a return visit on them to place a number of nails under the tyres of the 2 BMW X5'S they have to lord it over the congregation that they are better than anyone else. I am very bad."
This is so funny!! Shame on you! lol I'll admit, there's a few people I would like to do this to. Glad you and your kids enjoyed trick or treating. Isn't it nice to do nromal things with your family?

I used to simply disable the chime on my doorbell. This was easy--I put tissue under the plunger so it was maxed out in its lower position and could not move. Before that, I used to turn out the lights and pretend not to be home.
These days, as I have to work late nights, I just put a big bowl of candy out and let people help themselves. I also have the whole place decorated--lights, garlands (yes, they make garlands with pumpkins, ghosts, and bats), and bunting. I put a ghost with a color change LED and a pumpkin with a flashing LED inside, and right before Halloween I put a bigger light (that also makes noise if you activate it) in that pumpkin. A big poster of a pumpkin was installed on the window, and I have the drop-down spider that drops down if you make noise. Usually, no one comes anyways.

We used to turn the lights off and pretend we weren't home. I think that was/is a common occurrence among JWs.

Hid in the dark and watched TV.
But I spent one Halloween at a friend's house and his mom left the light on and every trick or treater that came by, they got a brand new Watchtower magazine. I preferred the hiding in the dark...

Band on the Run
Without fail, I heard how horrid it all was. Demonic. Yet my closest friends were trick and treating. There were no other Witnesses in our neighborhood. Once we heard the perfunctory lecture, we dressed up in beautiful costumes that my mom made. We usually won the school prize. I loved it. We had to be on the lookout for Witnesses, though.
Christmas and Halloween were the worst. The pain was so acute.
When I was eight, my three year old sister was allowed to come with us for a short while. My mom grabbed a white sheet and made her a ghost with a pink ribbon round her neck. I loved being the responsible older sister for five houses.

We were talking about Halloween and my agnostic British coworker for some reason mentioned that it was pagan blah blah blah and how Xmas and lots of other stuff came from pagan stuff ... it got to the point that we realized how FIRE, WATER, FOOD, certain clothing was used in religious/pagan practices first too, offered to "gods" and so on ... we were not talking about religion but I was about to have a panic attack b/c I thought about my JW upbringing and how every holiday is pagan and bad bad bad ... then I thought the stupidity of picking and choose what customs are bad and which ones are good according to "religious" people ...
Anyway, the church I go to had a Trunk or Treat. I decorated my car trunk and it was fun ... kids from the church dressed up in costumes and entertained thousands of people that came by the RiverFest where they enjoyed music, food and sodas, inflatable games. I bet we"fish" more people this way and give a message of love to our community heard by thousands.

A few years ago my parents and sister came to visit for a few days and Halloween happened to fall in those days. Did I restrict my children from participating in the Halloween festivities because my jw parents were there? On hell no! I go t my kids dressed, sent them on their way and got my candy bowl ready. The parental units were probably uncomfortable but they didn't voice it. Couldn't do anything about anyway cuz I'm not a baptized jw, my house my rules.
