His literacy is under debate. Certainly, it would be normal for him to read a bit b/c of the bar mitzvah. I read a discussion over my head as to whether he may have memorized the passage. It revolves around the use of pointer to read Hebrew scripture. Using the pointer indicates that you were literate. I can't imagine a carpenter functioning without some writing skill.
The vast majority of nonChristian scholars of the period believe that a Jesus of Nazarethe existed. Their view would be Jesus stripped bare of the later church additions. A Nazareth Nathan named Jesus. Altho I would like Jesus' sayings to be extraorindary and they do move me deep in my soul, his statements at not new.
I used to focus much on the historical Jesus. Yet the apostles were present with him and are not reported to understand his message. It seems that it was the post-Easter beliefs that led the apostles to feel they finally understood Jesus. If I were alive then and lived in the Holy Land, I'd probably just pass him on the road without a second glance.

I find it interesting that the One who told so many TO write is believed to have not been able to read or write himself. Some such "believers" also tend to scream a lot about logic. Interesting.
