If your kids can't handle school, how will they handle life???

    Ber,,, I get your point.

My question is,,, and I think you willl 'get' it ... is,,, what kind of life are we preparing them for? One of servitude? And if these parents aren't educated, whose fault is that? Perhaps they will do better with love, even uneducated love, than a system that puts their kids in a box. I dunno,,, really., :S

I'm sorry to be so negative, but I dealt with these people a lot, and I was appalled. How can you teach critical thinking and diversity at the kitchen table? Part of learning is actually experiencing different points of view. It's not all readin' rightin' and 'rithmatic.

The people I know who have home-schooled their children have been educated, enlightened, and had a social network. So, it's a whole different breed, from what you're saying. And as I said earlier, when the kids got to be 'tweens', they progressed into high school with a much better education than their contemporaries.

    I understand your viewpoint, though.

Perhaps they can be better prepared for life if they didn't have to face their peers, you know the ones bullying them on the bus, at school, on facebook.

They might not have to deal with drunk or drugged out kids, sex on the bus or in the woods, and so forth, so they can actually learn, really and truly learn in a nurturing enviroment. Some schools are armed with uniformed police in the hallways to prevent violence. That a great educationall enviroment,

How many as adults are routinely bullied, to the point it follows you home on your smart phone, how many are bullied on the bus or hallways of you secular job? I would venture very few.

My sons college professor told him that he was getting a much better education home schooling than he would've in public school. 15 yo and qualifies for college level science and is holding an A in the class.

If this post is incoherent its because I took an ambien 20 min. ago and cannot think clearly. Sorry!

Unless you can teach well and have the time to do it.....don't homeschool your children! I knew JW kids that were home schooled because their parents wanted to keep those evil worldly kids away. When they "graduated" they couldn't even tell you what century the declaration of independence was signed.

I see the same thing today with several of the youth at the local KH. 13, 14 years old and have the reading skills of a 9 year old.

Part of learning is actually experiencing different points of view.

...which is much easier to teach at a kitchen table than in a classroom where there are 30 or 40 students and ONE pov being crammed into their distracted heads.

My daughter is certainly able to form her own viewpoint, in spite of having an opinionated curmudgeon for a father.

Whatever curriculum you choose, be sure to check ebay before paying full price. Keep your books clean and you can resell on ebay later. That helped me take the sting out of paying $700 - $800 to Calvert each year.

And I agree with Six. His daughter is amazing (and he IS an opinionated curmudgeon).

I agree with that--and would add commitment to the list (see my previous post on this thread). Home-school parents have no monopoly on ineffective, uncaring teaching. Unfortunately, some teachers in traditional schools are merely marking time, going through the motions but accomplishing little in the way of education. You've had them, I've had them, and our kids have some of them too. You know who they are: they use the same lesson plans, assignments and tests for at least a decade, and are famous among the students for being easy graders. They are equivalent to home-school parents who toss their kids some workbooks and say the job is done. Both are do a disservice to the children entrusted to them.

(and he IS an opinionated curmudgeon)

There's nothing wrong with that! (RIP, Andy Rooney: America's best-known curmudgeon)
