Traditional news sources use Fact Check frequently. Snopes is also familiar from news. I wrote on a thread about Fox News that I read that many people no longer want their news filtered. Every news org is biased b/c it is an org. Evidently, many people are reporting their own news. Young people may have an easier time. I'd worry about scams. Of course, I read that hoax in the New York Times when it appeared. The one with the black journalist. No one ever checked his sources.
It would be a sad world if you had to constantly check facts. I wonder why the Bible has this mystique that ordinary people are unable to read it. Part of that is the Catholic Church but Protestants also fall into line. Its not just JWs who don't question. My local middle class Episcopalians also just accept whatever is preached. Somehow the mere fact that a person has the position gives authority. I studied with Elaine Pagels and have read all her books. Our guest special lecturer with perfect public speaking skills asserted that she said something that she did not. It was some fundamental issue that I can't recall. B/c he gave the sermon, people gave him great credence. NYers are bit more skeptical. People want church to be nice and nonconfrontial. I am one of them.
We can't fact check everything nor know every Bible verse and all of history at the same time. I read an excellent article about how people become Jehovah's Witnesses. The author wrote of personal losses and isolation met with approval for repeating the Wt garbage. I wonder if is so much fact based or a matter of being vulnerable at a particular point. If only the approval continued.
