undercover, I remember my maternal grandfather "marking" my siblings and my written reviews (he was the presiding overseer of the local congregation). My older sister was often in (barely suppressed) tears because she had difficulty spelling correctly and my grandfather's written comments were harshly negative about her abilities. By contrast, I never had any difficulty spelling correctly and I earned favourable written comments! Life is so unfair!

I still hate review night, and haven't attended in a long time. It seems just to be a 'filler' meeting, because there is nothing else to do, and they don't want to give the faithful a night off once in a while. I remember the written review night at an old hall, they passed around fiberboard mats so people wouldn't have to use their soft laps, or their songbooks.

1. Charles Taze Russell was not a Jehovah's Witness (because Judge Rutherford had not invented the term as yet); he was a 2nd Adventist.
2. Adventists were hung up on one idea that they could not let go of no matter how many times they were proved wrong: End Times date-setting.
3.Pastor Russell threw every gimmick he could cobble together into creating a personal theology to sell using books and magazines through his publishing house. Dispensation charts, Pyramidology, claims of inside information (FDS bullshit) created a fanbase of customers.
4. The eventual prediction for the End of the World was 1914 since Jesus had already returned. From 1879 to 1914 Russell worked this non-stop.
5. The 1914 date was problematic. Russell decided to use the outbreak of WWI as a "beginning of the end" save to avoid being refuted outright.
6. The strategy to hold on to 1914 was necessary due to 35+ years of emphasis and guarantees. Fudging the "little while longer" would buy time.
7.The death of Russell created a power vacuum which Judge Rutherford seized opportunistically. This was like taking over a failing business which still had plenty of customers. The Judge needed a way to hold on, pump up the volume and wean customers away from disgust over another failed date!
This began as SERIES OF SPACKLED OVER excuses, explanations, double-talk, flip-flops and lies continuously changing, distorting and transforming the MEANING of 1914.
Telling a lie long enough creates a familiar new perception!
Eventually, the Watchtower publications went along the lines of "assuming" 1914 was the BEGINNING of the pangs of distress all along! (Rather than the final battle of Armageddon as Russell had taught.)
Sweeping previous teachings under the rug, Jesus' arrival (invisible parousia) was brazenly pulled forward to bolster and prop up the new lie.
The best hope of maintaining the suspense and tension which was badly needed to replace the "hope" that 1914 once offered was to create
a special FICTION about the GENERATION that would not pass away UNTIL.......the battle of Aramgeddon.
The Watchtower Society kept pretending they had a foolproof COUNTDOWN CLOCK by pointing to the dwindling number of survivors on earth from 1914.
As all Adventist failures end in a Great Disappointment, the only way to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat was to tamper with the Countdown Clock over and over again!
What has pulled the Jehovah's Witness bacon out of the fire again and again wore vanishling thin in persuasive power to explain the unexplainable.
Enough NEW converts have replaced OLD members as a majority of totally CLUELESS Kingdom Hall atendees. They are totally UNaware of the "generation" problems over the years and the tampering, fingerprints, scene of the crimes clues of the Governing Body crimes!
Like a murderer returning to the scene of the crime, the Governing Body has hidden their malfeasance, changed the scene and challenged anybody who dares say different!
With the violent threat of DEATH at Armageddon for anybody who accuses them of bald-faced prevarications the MILLIONS NOW LIVING WILL NEVER DIE boast and promise has been buried in a shallow grave!
Only those of us who once smiled at householders with the feckless promise of deliverance "soon", or, who flawlessly laid out the generations Countdown Clock to our bible studies actually know how many thousands (if not millions) of us were shafted by the promise makers who are inveterate promise breakers.

I think the most eye opening point was when I read of the GB pondering changing 1914 to accomidate that fact that we're all still here. Like it was no problem, God follows our timetable

So you also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.The Importance of Watching

For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy(may have strength) to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
And in the daytime He was teaching in the temple, but at night He went out and stayed on the mountain called Olivet. luke 21:23-37in the bible, generation can also mean offspring or kind. Since the passage in luke 21:32 is talking about the final generation before the coming of the Son of Man it should also be looked at in context. The final generation is said to be eating and drinking giving in marriage etc and then sudden destruction comes upon them...this is the same as in noah's day...(matthew 24:37-39)and in noah's day it was the fallen angels who were giving and taking in marriage with human women. the NT talks about a flesh "man" and a spiritual "man"...so now-a-days those "wo[men]" who are giving and taking in marriage(fake Holy Spirit rev 13:13) those OTHER THAN Jesus Christ are impregnating their minds(the mark in the forehead rev 13:16) with doctrines of demons(1 timothy 4:1)...and they nurse these ideas along with others who would be deceived with them.(matt 12:35;luke 11:24-26)
those who are the bride of Jesus Christ have the Holy Spirit in them(see luke 1:35)...they are not deceived. (see john 14:23,26; 1 cor 6:14-19; 2 cor 6:16; rev 12:1-2)
imo "overlapping generation" is distraction for those already deceived.

As for the generation thing..I was amused when they tried to compare it to Scriptures in the O T (Hebrew Scriptures to them) I mean , what relevance does another book ,written in another language, at another time, have on the Mathew gospel?
Nobody disputes the translation of Mathew's word into the English "Generation" so it is the use of that word that we must examine. It may mean different things in different context, but it never means what they say it means!
When I heard a C/O at my wife's HAll, he said...." Boy! we have had some fun with that scripture over the years!" ....They have a strange idea of fun

how do you explain it briefly to a ex-jw or jw on the edge?
A couple of long time converts of my Dad asked why I'm not baptised. I told them one reason was because you have to believe everything they teach, including anything they teach in the future. "I do not believe that because my son was born before my grandfather died that they were both the same generation, (they were nodding in agreement here) so if I got baptised tomorrow you would just throw me out and shun me for refusing to believe your new generation doctrine." They got the point.

Apparently there is no easy way. And evidently the WTBTS is getting a great deal of negative feed back on the "Generation-New Light".
I recently attended the 2 day circuit assembly with the theme "Let God's Name Be Sanctified". Sunday has a symposium entitled "Sanctify God's Name by your Speech". And guess what? They have a skit adressing the question ......How do you explain the Overlapping Generation to someone who is struggling with it?
It was h-i-l-a-r-i-o-u-s! Brother Elder couldn't explain it either without reading word for word the one and only paragraph that adresses it in the 4/15/10 Watchtower page 10 par 14. It took all of 2 minutes for the young complaining brother to say in reply something to the effect............."Da, Okay Brother Elder thank you for helping me to understand it now. I feel better. I'll stop murmuring."
