Last year we had the decorations upstairs to avoid having to worry about elder visits. As it turned out they were busy printing off our jwn posts so it was irrelevant. This year we have the tree and lights up and a gargoyle on the doorstep in full view of the street. Sometimes leaving is the best thing.
