You might even say--and quite accurately--that in this 21st century, there is no boogie. Man. For if there were, we could blame it all...on the boogie.
Even as a JW, I was reluctant to attribute just any and every thing to Satan. It just seemed so ill-informed to make that assertion. That to me didn't seem like accurate JW teaching, even. But the superstitions about Satan abound amongst some JWs. Sad.

I'm fairly sure the 'official' Watchtower view is that, since mankind's fall in the Garden of Eden, we have been beset by many problems such as common medical problems. The question of birth defects was actually mentioned in one of the earlier editions of that little blue book released in 1967 entitled The Truth that Leads to Eternal Life: One of the chapters dared to suggest that birth were (often) due to sexual promiscuity - there is probably some truth in that suggestion, but it was worded in a judgmental way that even got a negative reacion from my lovely JW mother who had suffered a miscarriage due to the fetus having some deformities. I'm sure she wasn't the only one to react that way because I understand that later editions removed the offending passage! I recall my mothert saying something like, "How dare anyone imply such a thing!" Of course, she continued to believe 'it' was the truth all her days.
BTW, does anyone remember that statement about birth defects being due to promiscuity in the early edition of the book I mentioned in the earlier paragraph?
My sister got pregnant when she was sixteen and my nephew was born with a correctable birth defect. My dad told us kids (I was nine) that he had the birth defect because she had him out of wedlock. I thought all kids born to unwed parents had some birth defect even if you couldn't see it.

Yes, that was a fairly common view thathwas held by many groups, JWs included. What a cruel, unkind and judgemental view it was too! If some kind poster who has a scan of that quote from the so-called 'Truth' book can post it here we'll see firsthand how the Watchtower slyly suggested birth defects were due to something morally questonable about the mother.
