There is probably nothing more dangerous you could have in your home than a 5 week old fir tree that has gotten dry and crispy.

Keep a box of dynamite under the bed or leave a loaded gun where the kids can get at it, nothing has more potential for disaster than one of these tree bombs.

I have spent many a sleepless night with one of these in the house, counting the days until Christmas so I could get it out of the house. I hate them. We have gone to a fold-up plastic table top since all the kids left home and we only have that because the G-kids always want to see a tree when they are over.

    Christmas trees - Bah humbug!

Favorite line from a xmas episode of WKRP in Cincinnati...

Johnny and Venus bring a tree to Jennifer's apartment. Johnny says, "In honor of xmas, we killed you a tree"

They smell good while they are still fresh, though. Who keeps them for five weeks, BTW?

five weeks... Thanksgiving to New Years roughly I know people who do that.

Personally, if I were to put up a tree, I'd do it the week of xmas and take it down on Jan 2.

"Personally, if I were to put up a tree, I'd do it the week of xmas and take it down on Jan 2."

That sounds about right. I got mine a couple days shy of Xmas and plan to take it down right after new years eve.

Hard to believe that in the old days they decorated the tree with lit candles!

Yep, Thanksgiving to New Years and the tree was cut a week before you bought it. Been there and done that. You end up with more needles under the tree than on it.

The water cup stand? Mental masturbation that you are being careful.

This is what we do - and usually we use a silver artificial one.

I adore Christmas trees. Every season I do a circuit of Xmas trees, part of a family tradition that my JW parents developed. Toys at Macy's, animated windows, and Rockefeller Center. I love a Frasier Fir. The fire hazard is so great that I switched to an artificial tree that is very artificial. Life is sweet, though. They dry out so quickly. One year was very warm and the tree had to be thrown out before Xmas.

Does anyone know how the candles were affixed?

When you put it up doesn't make a lot of difference. What matters is when it was cut, and how it is maintained after that. Make a new, fresh cut at the bottom when you put it up, and never let its water pan go dry. Or use an artificial tree (as I do), especially if you're going to be away for any length of time so you can't keep an eye on the water.

Gently but firmly grasp a handful of needles. Are they supple or do they break off?

Even if supple, they can ignite from candles, heaters, (especially base board types). Remember, if you trim the tree with electric lights it is like wrapping the thing in a few dozen little electric heaters.

If they are crispy you can almost ignite them with a hard stare.
