can you just stop just for a moment????, and quit being 'so ex-JW,' analyzing this and analyzing that,,please try to just embrace the beauty, the awesome, the peaceful moment!!!

nooooooooo, here we go analyzing 'genes,' 'recessive.' 'artificial' that, 'evolution' that, 'incest' this, 'geographic isolation' that.

I guess when we were kids we didn't get to ask 'why' anything, so now we make up for it! 'Why?' everything. (see, I have the 'over-analyzing curse' too)

but this just sounds like grasping at straws of 'proof'.

    It's not.

Evolution is meant to take millions of years as i remember, not be the result of 3 generations of animal incest.

It can take millions of years. It can also happen very rapidly. The deer have been isolated for almost 60 years. That's 60 generation of deer. Twice as many as it took to in controlled experiments to get from silver foxes to floppy eared dogs.

It's all a 'theory' people...as is anything to do with 'how we got here'.

Evolution is a theory, the highest level attainable in science. Like gravity or relativity. They all work every day and stand up to ever test (so far) thrown at them.

Just appreciate them for what they are, not what you think they mean!

I do appreciate them for what they are, an example of evolution in action!

Geographic isolation often produces new species...Look at the fauna of the Galapagos Islands, for example...

Evolution on Isolated islands is promoted by the environmental factors affecting the phenotype. A area fenced off by man will create a gene pool but the enviroment will not significantly change. It would be interesting to see what would happen if the isolation were maintained for a few hundred generations!!

As EP said, we are agreeing that this is demonstrating the evolution process, but just one part of it, i.e the change in alelles.

As Ozzie said it is a beautiful beast for what ever reason.

"Evolution is meant to take millions of years as i remember, ..." Aussie Oz

No, actually, Scientific American had an article on insect evolution - a young scientist was studying fruit flies in the orchards of the Pacific Northwest, when she realized that she was looking at evolutionary changes occurring within a few generations of insects - occurring within a couple of years, in human terms...

Evolution proceeds at the pace that the conditions allow - whether within a few insect generations, or many hundreds of thousands of years for say, whale evolution...

Ah, maybe. Would you consider the removal of ANY predation (man or otherwise) a significant change? The need for ANY camoflauge is gone, so normally recessive genes can begin the rear and mutations that would normally kill them in the wild, like the hobbling, can thrive.

Personally I think that in order to combat the genetic depression, they should remove some of the deer, white and otherwise, and introduce some healthy deer from other populations to promote genetic diversity.

    But that's just me.

    Yer welcome, Talesin!!

By the way, I can talk now - without hacking too much...

Will try to call this evening... Probably won't be able to talk very long, but would like to chat with you...

Yes, EP, let's F*** with nature even more .....

    duh!

sorry, I DISAGREE ... any problems with natural cycles are mostly OUR FAULT ,,, it's time to realize what IDIOTS the GREEDY HUMAN RACE produces, and pull back.

If its an Albino deer you are supposed to shoot it to protect the gene pool. They have weaker immune systems and pass on defects which can be bad for the general population of deer.
