So even though someone can understand that God is LOVE, and that love demands he show mercy for his fellow human, he might not have learned that from any words at all, the Bible included.

Tec - you pick and choose from the bible at will. You refer to texts as if anybody should actually accept that Jesus really did or said anything it claims he did. But when others point out texts that contradict your claims you have a ready collection of excuses why the bible shouldn't be trusted. Its like playing tennis without a net.
I would love a specific ex ample. What te x t has someone pointed out that contradicts that Christ is the Truth; the one to whom we should listen to?

You find that te x t and then I'll do what you say I'm doing.

N.drew - You said it 3 times but it still doesn't answer the question.

What text has someone pointed out that contradicts that Christ is the Truth

That's a clever evasion of my point.

Who wrote those words down, was it really Matthew the illiterate fisherman? Are they really the actual words of Jahoosua? How do you know? Is the gospel of Matthew reliable? What about when it contradicts the gospels of Mark and Luke?

    Actually, its a Hosea quote.

You know that silly old OT that contains only wrathful, vengeful, murdering tyrant God... the one that is so far removed from the God Christ showed? You guys think that the God who Christ showed cannot be found in the OT. But He can, in places like that. It is the OT that has contradicting accounts of the nature of God. Christ is the one who shows us the TRUTH between those contradictions.

Words don't create truth. But words assist in organizing truth for deeper understanding and for communication.

Christ is a model. The model exists without the narrative. The narrative helps us draw closer. A person can go from believer (without the word) to friend, even colleague with it! The Bible is not necessary for "salvation" which is another subject. I won't comment on it here.

Tec - And how do you know anything at all about what Jesus said or did?

No it is not. I have asked you for a specific ex ample. You haven't given me one, so if I don't know what you're talking about, then consider that it is because you are throwing a vague idea out there without somethign specific to back it up. Also I asked you to give me something specific about how I 'invariably take quotes out of conte x t'.

You evaded that one too. Whether it was clever or purposeful or not, I would not presume to say.

    Peace,

    Tammy

    Christ is a model

Again how do you know the first thing about christ without starting with an ancient book you don't even trust?

Well then, are we only going with New Testament, or Old Testament here? Perhaps simply pointing out that Jesus never criticized any of the OT writings--no, he quoted from them, and stated that he was in full agreement with god---the only god the Hebrews knew at that time was the god of the OT---who Jesus completely agreed with.

So even though Jesus supposedly brought in a new way, his absolute support of what went on before then, says a lot about Jesus.

That said, most who try to paint the softer, loving picture try to distance Jesus from the angry, blood thirsty god of the OT. However, Jesus didn't even try to do that.
