The other day (australia day bbq actually) i somehhow got to discussing JWs with some of my wifes extended family. One of them, quite well educated and academic mentioned she was given a WT (no awake to go with it) when they called.

She commented that as she read some of it, it struck her how it was going on about pedaphiles and homosexuals a lot and secondly how every thing they said was not backed up by any legitimate research nor data, just random % this or that to support the flimsy arguments.

Her comment was that this was the most un-academic, poorly written journal she had ever read and without going any further, threw it in the trash!

The sheeple migh lap up the recycled vomit in that rag, but the public aint fooled.

The family laughed heartily when i informed them of the JW belief that the WT and Awake! gave them the equivalent of a 'university education'...

ps...keep up the good work writing department.

At one time I used to regularly see pristine copies of the rags in the re-cycling dumpster in our small town, I don't get to see in it now, they have changed the design, but even back then people were taking them to get the JW to move on down the neighbourhood, and just dumping them straight, where they belong, in the trash.

It shows that non-jw readers are not impressed by the assertions of the WTS as proof and expect a minimum of outside research that has complete attributions that can be verified and read.

The magazines really are pretty horrible when you look at it from an academic perspective.

I mean, if I turned in that second article on 607BCE and VAT4956 to a college professor as my own, they would fail it immediately! Who are "the researchers"? What peer-review journal were these findings published in?

Sadly, the average person is not going to see these fatal flaws. Hell, I only know about this stuff now because I started going to college!

Yes, as a never-was JW, I can confirm that my view of WTBTS literature is/was that it was poorly-produced propaganda which did not deserve the time spent to read it.

Even most JWs never read the magazines.

The tone increasingly talks down to the reader. The articles are recycled from previous issues and even more dumbed down.

To prove to yourself that what we are saying in this edition of the rag/watchtower is good and solid info, simply go to this previous edition or to this book that we published or to some other piece of out litertrash where we said this was true and factual. Mind you it might lead to chasing the cat's tail because when you do refer to that source you will be directed to yet another earlier spewing of info from US.

I think it goes to show that the public edition of the WT, and to a lesser extent the Awake magazine are not necessarily for the public, as much as both are for the JWs themselves, or those associated with JWs. The public magazines and other literature serve a couple purposes, one of which is to provide the JWs with something to occupy their time with by peddling it to the public. The other reason is to maintain indoctrination of JWs. Even that article from a couple months back with the WT reaffirming it's stance of 607 BC being the date of Jerusalem getting sacked by Babylon, that wasn't for the public as the public by and large is not interested about when that event took place. Who does care about when that even occurred, is people like you and me on this message board, and also the JWs who are not entirely satisfied with what's on the CD Rom, which I'm under the impression those types of JWs are increasing in numbers due to the Internet.

A lot of it goes back to what Ray Franz stated about people who need someone to tell them what to believe. The freedom of analyzing situations such as religious beliefs is not appealing to everyone, particulary the mentally lazy, and even more so the underclass and uneducated. The WT fills that void by publishing literature designed to tell someone what to believe. The publishers and even more so their audience, are not interested in debate or research. The publishers wishes to prepare and deliver the platter, and the audience simply wants to lap it up without the need for Rolaids, Tums, or Prilosec afterwards. Just a simple "this is how it is" will suffice, and that satisfies both parties.

Anybody with an education, or even without an education yet capable of critical thought and reasoning isn't gonna fall for the malarkey the WT is tossing out there. The WT knows this all too well, which is why they continue to hold onto the Service Meeting despite it's inablity to assist anyone in attendance with making converts, especially in the West. The Service Meeting's intent is to impress the audience of JWs to read the magazines, be prepared to offer the literature, don't forget to pick up your literature, your calender, your Yearbook, your Daily Text, etc. All of this is an exercise in doctrination under the false guise of preparing to offer life-saving literature to the general public.
