My spouse and I had supper with some long time friends this evening. We got onto the subject of baptisim, and out of the four of us, we all got baptized for some other reason than love of Jehovah. I find this to be really sad. I was baptized because my father said he wouldn't go to my wedding if I wasn't baptized (1st marriage, lasted 4 horrid years). My hubby got baptized because his parents told him it was time for him to get baptized. My girlfriend got baptized because everyone else was, and her hubby got baptized because his friend did the year earlier and he was starting to get some heat from people in the KH.

Not one of us got baptized because we had love for Jehovah and wanted to serve him forever. This is sad. The WTBTS claims that its people get baptized because of wanting to serve God forever, and because of love for him. I have met more people who were pressured into baptisim, or that they were expected to get dunked, so they did, than I have of people who wanted to serve god.

How about you? What were your reasons for getting baptized?

Guilt.... The girls that studied with me told me if I came to work for Jehovah I Might get into the Kingdom& be forgiven

Because I had done so much wrong, got pregnant at 16 ,stole a 10 penny ring from Woolworths when I was 11 yrs old

I thoght I had better try to get the job... So got baptised for this God who was going to forgive me for that.
But truly wanted to serve HIM>>> So after the study of two years to educate me. Got "dunked"

mouthy-so many of us got baptized because of guilt. I felt guilty that my dad wouldn't go to my wedding.

    Tater-T-good for you!

I did it so the elders would get off my parents' backs.

I should have got baptised as a PHYSICAL SYMBOL of the SPIRITUAL reality of coming to faith in Jesus, having had my sin (dysfunction) IMPUTED to him at his death, and having had his righteousness, holiness, sinlessness and sonship IMPUTED to me, as a legal transaction secured by his ransom sacrifice, and as a free unmerited gift.

The Watchtower Sanhedrin (Governing Body) had other ideas where I would belong to and follow them instead of Jesus the stone of stumbling and rockmass of offense whom they rejected when laying the foundations of their kingdom.

I got baptized because I thought Jehovah would start doing things for me once I did. Which he did not--like I am supposed to do everything for that Almighty Freeloader, and he doesn't have to do jack squat for me. And no, I never did love that Almighty Lowlife Scumbag to the point where he could go back on everything he promised me and I still would give up everything for him, at great hardship. (Which would invalidate everything I thought he was, rendering any love invalid and on false premises.)

It was a come-on. First, it was to accept the Suffer Forever book and read it. Then it was to study it. Then it was to start attending boasting sessions--all of them. Then it was to join the Theocraptic Misery "School(??)", and waste 6 hours on a fxxxing #2 talk. Then it was to go out in field circus--upon which I saw nothing, they said I needed to keep doing it. Then baptism. Once I got baptized, it was pious-sneering and reaching out to become a hounder. Then Beth Hell. Ultimately, I was to waste my whole life chasing after a tyrant that is even worse than King Rothschild, and getting no reward except watching the opposite sex pass me right by and dying without anything worthwhile. Baptism was just one more of those steps I was supposed to do.

Don't feel too bad. Afterall, "loving God" is not associated with baptism in the Bible, is it?

I got baptized because of peer pressure. I moved to a new congregation when I was 16 years old. I kid you not....there wasn't a person over the age of 10 that wasn't baptized (because ya know.....10 is the perfect age to make life long decisions/committments). You wouldn't believe how many times I heard the question "your're not baptized"? From that point on....my 16 year old mind starting focusing on what I needed to do to get dunked.
