Reluctant to admit being a JW is a "spiritual tactic"?

I was speaking to a neighbor who is a JW but has no idea that I used to be one. He was talking about why he has to "spread the good news" at his place of employment and I asked him if people tend to balk once he mentions the JW's.

He stated that he uses a "spiritual tactic" to sometimes get around this problem. He said when he hears someone talking about religious or biblical matters, he will often chime in with "What do you think about the Jehovah's Witnesses way of interpretation?"

If they answer with a real negative tone, he will let the matter drop. However, if they seem curious, then he will go on with his presentation. He then told me that "admitting your are a Witness these days is getting harder and harder to do."

Has anyone else on this board used this "spiritual tactic" and are you reluctant to admit being a JW?

Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”

I just find it amusing that he looks at the denial as a "spiritual tactic."

Maybe someone can post some of the current examples from the KM on how they introduce themselves at the door. A few that I remember from a few years back were...

We are in a volunteer work...

We are in a bible educational work...

We are your talking to our neighbors today about...

Basically no "We are Jehovah's Witnesses...." because that is simply tips the homeowner off to close the door.

What happened to "We are Jehovah's Witnesses, we speak out in fearlessness?"

I wonder if this is organized or ordered. Someone was posting JW answers to Reference Questions on Wikipedia. The poster could turn almost any discussion into a forum for JW thought without any notice that he was a JW or the linked material was JW. Regulars kept chastising him. Someone asked for the best translation or a specific translation of the Bible. He did not say NWT but linked there. Someone not knowing would find themselves in the clutches of the JWs.

It wasn't bitter. I thought it was much more sophisticated ploy than most Witnesses. What a way to do field service.

It is getting more and more embarrassing these days to be a witless. The more mainstream Christian denominations realize that the witlesses do not teach what the Bible actually teaches. And the "unchurched" realize that evangelism is a waste of time.

And both groups are seeing more bad fruits of the witlesses. Children being molested and then silenced is becoming more common knowledge these days. Every so often, you see something that would be more to be expected from some extremist Muslim than a reasonable Christian--including acts of violence against the family or neighborhood. More frequently, you see the witlesses doing nothing of value for the community despite proclaiming to do a charitable work. Children are denied proper education (mostly because they are kept up late on school nights for a boasting session, frequently on test nights). They claim to respect the earth, then they waste resources and pollute stupidly. Within the past year or so, they have been printing rubbish that borders on outright hate crime (and often fits together when several different articles a few months apart are fitted together, such as the "mentally diseased" article along with "We would kill apostates if it was legal to do so" in a later article). Discrepancies between what the public is told and what the members are told are common.

Additionally, what is there to lose if one discloses oneself as a witless? They are seen as pests in the community. That means, if they are in business, their business will go down. Reputation in the community becomes one of being willing to endure any sort of rubbish from people without recourse, and people will trample on them. They are supposed to be exemplary in every way. To me, that is enough to be embarrassed to be a witless.

It had been encouraged to let people observe your fine conduct, offer some sound advice or insights and then later tell them who you are so they wouldn't be turned off by hearing the name JW's right away. That method sounds more like a snake who said "Is it really so...?"

I asked my jw why jw's will not admit upfront at the door why they will not say they are jw's, even when asked numerous times. His answer was that if they admit it no one will talk to them. My next question was, "so, your reputation preceeds you?" He didn't care much for that question.

I like that Carla "Your reputation preceeds you" , that is very true, I was thinking back to how whenI was young I used to hide the JW bit from everybody, evenwhen going door to door.

We were encouraged to do it,by older Dubs, to a degree.

In later years I came straight out with it, and if they didn't want to talk, fair enough. But it never made me face the question, "Why do they view us as a weird cult ?"

If I had truly squared up to that question, my exit from the weird cult may have come sooner.
