But -- as one of those holier-than-thou pioneers -- she was able to use him.

Apparently Marcy was quite comfortable with the idea of Peppermint Patty presenting herself as a boy and having a thing for Charlie Brown. I'd say Marcy was a pretty enlightened chick.
