(Sorry about this, I'm reliving my love of the "Father Ted" episodes. I guess you need to watch them to understand!)

I'm tellin' ya. This is what the fisty-cuffs was all about and here's the photo to prove it:
"There seems to be a very crude watercolour of a man in a cheap suit".
Many brothers were not happy at all when the British branch "merged" with the Irish branch.
a lil bit of nationalism appeared at that time. some were shocked...
same Divs are running it! :-)
As WildeLover suggested, I wouldn't be surprised if nationalism was a major factor in any voices of dissent. The Irish do NOT like the English one bit due to the colonial heritage. Many Irish have long memories when it comes to the atrocities committed by the likes of Oliver Cromwell. The thought of being "ruled over" by a branch based in London will not have sat well with many of the older ones.
In one town I visited on the west coast of Ireland, there were rumours of a German U-boat seeking shelter in a local bay during the second world war whereupon the crew were enthusiastically greeted and shown hospitality by the locals. "Never mind that your Nazis hell-bent on slaughtering the jews and taking over the world - you're fighting the English, so you're alright by us!"
Crazy stuff.
