Ashford Castle, Ireland. Not really a "hotel" though.
Where is the nicest hotel that you ever went to in your lifetime?

My absolute favourite is the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. I also second the recommendation of the above post by Twitch for the Banff Springs Hotel.
Website:
(not sure why the address is so looonnnggg!)
Apparently, it is a destination for celebrities too, such as Pierce Brosnan, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, Chevy Chase, Tim Robbins and Shannon Tweed.

Casa Conde Del Mar in Costa Rica
Casa Conde Del Mar Hotel and Resort is located on Playa Panama, which lies in the northern region of Guanacaste. Situated directly on one of the country's most beloved beaches, yet only 20 minutes driving from Liberia's international airport, this mini paradise can be reached just moments after your arrival in Costa Rica. The Guanacaste region, aptly dubbed as Costa Rica's "Wild West", is home not only to the country&s most pristine beaches, but also to several mountain ranges, volcanoes and tropical dry forests where natural beauty and wildlife abound.
This is a 4 Star Resort at prices that you couldn't even find in the US!

I've stayed at a lot of nice places. I have a beachfront timeshare in the Bahamas, it's all inclusive so I get to drink myself into a stupor. I've stayed at the Ritz-Carlton a couple of times. That's pretty nice. Last month I stayed at the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas, that wasn't bad either. I'll be at a beachfront house in Central America for a few days next month, which is nicer than a hotel. IMHO.
I'll be going to San Fran a few days after I get back from there.
Any recommendations?

The Ahwahnee is on my bucket list. Been there several times for brunch. Camped on the river, but went to the Ahwahnee for brunch...which I liked the combination of opposite experiences. It's really a special place in a special place.

Some hotels are anchored in bedrock, some cross the sea at a stately pace, but my favorite hit 100MPH crossing the desert southwest, back in the days when American rail service had real first-class service
