Well, if they're not allowed there are an awful lot of disobedient JWs then! LOL (Including elders, MSs and pioneers).
The real reason would be control of information. Social net-working sites like FB is full of information detrimental to the average dubbie. They might find out the truth about the cult they are in.
The are loads of reasons excuses given ranging from the time it uses up to becoming addicted and the analogy is used of not inviting a stranger into your car so why invite a stranger to your FB page. hardly the same thing but ............
JWs are not forbidden from joining Facebook. They are, in various ways, discouraged from it and warned about the dangers of it, thus trying to create a fear of it.
Occasionally I hear of reports of where elders are not allowed to use FB, but I personally know of at least two elders that are on FB. No repurcussions for them.
The level of which JWs police themselves, whether it's FB, the Internet, R-rated movies, Harry Potter books or even porn, is based on how much of the JW Kool-Aid they consume and digest. The more they accept the WT warnings, the more they shun social media and worldly information and entertainment. The less zealous the JW, the less they hold to the 'suggestions' of Mother
In fact the the feature articles of Awake February 2012 were devoted to FB and judged by watchtower standards it seemed rather liberal to me... At least it did not at all demonize FB as some might have expected... But of course this was in Awake, not in the study edition of the Watchtower, different targets
Now I understand their methods of control and their misuse of analogies and fake people/situations it is easy to spot the loaded language and "suggestions" behind their manipulation of members.
The society never actually has to say "do not do something" but will push their point of view in the form of a question "would a thinking person do this" or would a "true Christian" do that and the individual is manipulated into believing the decision was theirs and conscience based. Discovering the level of control the GB have in aspects of members lives they have no business in even having an opinion on is shocking
They do not do this by accident or chance.
If the GB had a FB page all the dubbies who "liked" it would be giving them access to all their FB activity, photos and status updates and who they were friends with. Any who did not "like" the GB would be those having something to hide.
Hmm, maybe this is not an "official" FB page for the Pope, based on the photos I saw, like the one above.
A few years ago FB was really discouraged and slated especially at assemblies. Now they realise they can't control it's use amoungst it's members so they just try to control HOW it is used. But the damage has already been done in my opinion. Most older ones who aren't computer literate and out-of-touch elders already see it as something evil just because it's been given so much attention by the society.
The recent awake articles were actually refreshingly balanced but there was a big emphasis on making your page an online advert for a good little JW lifestyle. So getting drunk with your friends is okay as long as you don't plaster pics all over your fb? And people find it easier to say what they really mean online so be extremely careful with the comments you write? Personally I'd rather know what people get up to at the weekends and hear what they really think rather than the polished, censored version of the themselves online. It's called being yourself!
Ps 26:4 I have not sat with men on untruth; and with those who hide what they are I do not come in.
