    George Clooney arrested

George Clooney and his father have been arrested during a protest outside the Sudanese embassy, and the actor says he has asked President Barack Obama to engage China on stopping a humanitarian crisis in northern Africa.

The protesters accuse Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir of provoking a humanitarian crisis and blocking food and aid from entering the Nuba Mountains in the county's border region with South Sudan.

Clooney, his father Nick and others were arrested on Friday after being warned three times not to cross a police line outside the embassy. Those taken into custody included NAACP President Ben Jealous, Martin Luther King III, and actor and comedian Dick Gregory.

Several members of Congress also were arrested, including Massachusetts Representatives James McGovern and John Olver, Texas Rep. Al Green and Rep. Jim Moran of Virginia. They were handcuffed and placed into a US Secret Service van.

Clooney was released several hours later after paying a $US100 ($A95.30) fine.

The arrests came after Clooney met this week with Obama, testified in the Senate and attended a state dinner for British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Clooney told AP before he was arrested that he could only hope to draw attention to the crisis in Sudan but that he didn't know if any progress had been made. He said he was impressed, though, with Obama's engagement on the issue.

"It's amazing to sit down with a world leader who knows all of the intricacies of what's going on in Sudan," he said.

The actor said he asked Obama to involve China more in pushing for a solution in Sudan. A YouTube video Clooney recently posted online from his trip to Sudan appears to show a Chinese-made missile being used against the Nuba community.

Clooney said international leaders need to "follow the money" flowing to Sudan's leaders to expose corruption.

"This is a moment where we have a chance to do something because if we don't, in the next three to four months, there's going to be a real humanitarian disaster," Clooney said before his arrest. The situation is urgent, he said, because the upcoming rainy season would block transportation of food aid to the area.

Clooney said he didn't know if his actions would make a difference but that he at least wanted to make more people aware.

"It's such a silly thought to think you're actually succeeding in any of this," he said. "But if it's loud enough and you keep making it loud enough at the very least people will know about it, and you can't say we didn't know. That's the first step."

To be sure george Clooney can get some publicity out of this ,but does that take away from the plight and injustice these people are forced to endure ? Surely whatever means are used to bring these type of atrocities to the media is worthwhile.

Well, I feel sorry for him. Despite starring in a damn good movie, and garnering positive reviews, he missed out on an Academy Award. It went to the French Actor instead. That's got to hurt a left-leaning American. I just cannot see the connection to the Sudanese embassy, though. Perhaps he knows something we ordinary folk don't? I suspect we wouldn't care if he weren't famous.

In any revolution of change, it has been the artists who drew attention to oppressive regimes. Alexandr Solzhenitsyn comes to mind.

Why should it be any different in our culture? People like Clooney, Penn, Damon, and many others, are using their fame and money to speak out about injustice, and I admire them for it.

Let's not metaphorically 'ship them off to Siberia', just because the government can't suppress their voices. Let's not bury our heads in the sand because the truth is painful to hear.

Why would China be interested in working with the USA? They're fighting for Africa's resources, they don't want to be working with the USA.

It's a publicity stunt for American policies.

George Clooney is not an artist. Hes only in Hollywood because of nepotism. These days half of hollywood is the son or neice of some big wig.

George Clooney has been incredibly dedicated to this. He's used his fame and popularity to do something that a private person would not be able to achieve---shining a public spotlight on the suffering of a people that would otherwise be ignored. What's wrong about that? I think it is very right.

$1.6Trillion spent on the world's military madness in 2010 how much on food to aid the hungry. Glad to see father and son bringing the Sudan issue to the fore front.
