Did anyone note how many times "The Shawshank Redemption" has been listed? A great movie and a favorite of mine.

My most favoite (at the moment) "The Matrix". I could watch it every night. I'm lucky enough to have a DVD player with home theater digital surround sound so its like being there.

Some of my other favorites include:

    Unforgiven
    The Searchers
    Outlaw Josie Wales
    White Castle
    Casablanca
    A Brox Tale
    A River runs through it
    Stand and deliver
    Big
    Titanic
Pearl Harbor (they could leave out the romance, and keep the history part)
    Mad Max
Seven Samuri ( right on Ashi! a great movie even with subtitles)
    Full metal Jacket
    Platoon
    Bride of Frankenstien
    Aliens
    The Enchanted Cottage
    The Secret Garden
ALL of the Godfather series (with a special vote for part 2)
    As good as it gets
    There's something about Mary
    Armageddon (outrageous special affects)
    South Pacific
    Citizen Kane
    War Games
    Hunt for Red October?
    Forrest Gump
    Gladiator
    Romancing the Stone
    Hang um High
The good, the Bad, and the Ugly
    traffic

and I'm sure there are many more that I just can't think of in the heat of the moment!

Gosh, what do I wanna watch tonight........??????

I liked refiners wife’s comments particularly because it seems like any movie from the U.S. with “heaps of violence” (i.e. it Pulp Fiction or The Godfather) gets really popular overseas… As for Equus I did read the play in Junior high and found the effect quite disturbing…

Bitter Mango mentioned The Magnificent Ambersons, which I love particularly because of the “commupance”. It also shows what happens to any clan of individuals who make a stern effort to isolate themselves from society (i.e. Jehovah’s Witnesses) She also liked Chasing Amy which is one of the best romance movies I have seen.

Bboyneko mentioned Dark City, which came out around the same time as The Matrix, although I consider the former a 100 times better. Seriously, one of the best sci-fi movies ever made.

Gilwarrior mentioned Red Rock West, which was shot right in my home state. I have not seen it so if it is good I’ll look for it.

Joelbear mentioned The Wizard of Oz as on of his favorites even though I’m not a huge fan. He also said I should lose my “gay card” for not mentioning it even though I was in the school play!

Ashitaka’s choices impress the hell out of me because Miller’s Crossing was also mentioned. Seriously, when I think of perfection, I think of this movie: the acting, dialogue, music, and photography are beyond reproach. I like the Seven Samurai mention although I prefer Yojimbo (Toshiro Mifune rocks).

I appreciated MegaDude’s mention of The Last Temptation of Christ because it is the best Hollywood film to analyze the life of Christ and all the ambiguities surrounding his divinity and life. If you haven’t seen I hope you do, it’s an amazing film.

Mindfield mentioned The Matrix, and I’m probably the only person who thinks it’s overrated. I prefer the Wachowski brothers’ previous effort Bound.

I liked Lilacs choices as well. I was impressed with The Green Mile particularly because it took its time with developing the characters, and I thought I wouldn’t like it….

California Sunshine mentioned the only film on the thread I have not heard of (The Enchanted Cottage) and The Godfather Series. The Godfather was the first R-rated film that I rented after I left my congregation and I was amazed at how perfect it is.

    In short, excellent choices guys…
