MOST students? And this goes for selling drugs as well. I doubt that "most students" do prostitution, strip club work, or sell drugs to pay college debt. Maybe some will think of it in passing, but realize that is not the way to go. I believe more will ultimately default on such debt than will turn to prostitution and/or drug dealing. (And end up enslaved to the banks in the process.)
My view on college is that the debt is the only valid cost to worry about. If the opportunity cost is modest (most people will find it modest), and you can go without excessive debt, you should go. If you are worried about the debt, wait until you can pay or pay as you go. (Or find apprenticeship.) If your opportunity cost is excessive, chances are good that you already have a thriving business or are a movie or music star.
Apparently it's true
I don't doubt that it is true that students resort to such tactics to pay for thier education. It's just that they always dredge up every rotten thing they can to show that higher education is a bad scary thing. They want JW's to get their education reading their magazines and will use every tactic they can to scare them off from advancing beyond that.
When I was in Bethel, I worked in the hot sweaty bindery with a guy that became a JW just after he got out of College. He got chosen to work in the Law Offices because of his previous education while the rest of us who followed their advice and went to Bethel instead of College were overlooked. He was then sent to Law School.
WITNESS007:
I had heard this story several years ago with regard to some women who were determined to go to medical school.
I don't think however this applies to somebody going to community college somewhere. Of course the idiots in the religion would use this extreme example and apply it to everybody. Well, what about the college graduates accepted in bethel for their special skill. Did these people do this? I don't think so.
The religion will stoop to any level to keep young JWs out of college, they consider higher education THAT much of a threat!
Here is the article, and a couple of things jump out at me. First, prostitution is legal in Paris and Berlin, so all the question is asking is if they would perform a legal but undersireable job to pay for college. Students perform lots of undesireable but legal jobs to get through college. Kiev is a sex tourism destination, and the depressed economy there has only made it worse. If those women are already selling their bodies to eat, why would they balk at selling them to get an education that would enable them to eventually not sell their bodies?
How much is your college tuition worth? At Berlin University, 1 in 3 students said that they would consider working as a prostitute in order to pay for college. The study, conducted by the Berlin Studies Center, found that 4% had already done some form of sex work in order to pay for college.
The study found that 4% of students in Berlin, where prostitution is legal, have either worked as a prostitute, stripper, or conducted an online show to raise money for tuition.
Eva Blumenschein, one of the study’s authors said:
“The main motivation of students to turn to prostitution were the financial incentives, namely the high hourly wages. It’s possible that because educational reforms have increased student workloads, they have less time to earn money. Coupled with higher student fees, in this instance, leads students into prostitution.”
The Berlin Studies Center also surveyed students in Paris and Kiev. 29.2% of students in Paris said they would consider sex work, and 18.5% said the same in Kiev.
WHAT is the issue that this is in? That question hasn't been answered.
I fondly recall travelling downtown to street walk with my co-ed classmates. The money was so good and the experience so nice that we all dropped out. No more lawyers, doctors, architects, writers........
The sad thing is that if you are isolated as Witnesses, you believe their garbage.
The press jumped on Santorum stating as a fact that college students lose faith. Every objective study states that faith is increased by college. I suppose you need a dumbed down faith for the Witnesses.
I just could not live a Witness life. College was where I learned for certain how they distort scripture. Imagine how much we would know if we studied the Bible rather than WT literature.
We had a pioneer sister who stripped in a town 60 miles away to support her full-time preaching...........saying is not the same as doing........how reputable was that survey.
