Not sure if you'll get the chance to do any reading over the next while, but this blog (Teaching Cancer to Cry) is written by a young guy in New York who was diagnosed, had treated, went into remission, treated again, successful remission, with colon cancer.

    Pretty inspirational stuff.

And the best of British luck to you.

Cofty, quick question off the back of reading your earliest posts; St Fillans? Coatbridge? You'll know my family members, the Beresfords from Coatbridge! And our family (the Hunters (my mum was a Dickson)) used to go to St Fillans on holiday in the 70s and 80s, too! In fact, we took our kids up there for a wee outing today.

    Our paths perhaps crossed?

Hey everybody thank you so much for all your best wishes, far too many to reply to individually. Thanks for the laughs and the good advice.

I have finished the garden just in time and its looking good. Went to see my old team win 4-1, had my last decent meal for a while, and packed my bag. Last job is to pick out my books. My mum, dad and sister are coming to visit on Friday so at least one of the books has to be by Sean B. Carroll, Nick Lane or Dawkins. It will be strange seeing my sister for the first time in 16 years!

passwordprotected I knew your family really well, I will send you a PM in a few minutes. I hope my old dad was never a pain in your ass - its entirely possible!

Cofty, you have my utmost respect and I'm looking forward to your return..... preferably on a red stallion with a legion of demons behind you as that would be fitting for an atheist of your stature. Best wishes, my clear-thinking compadre. Talk to you soon.

Lots of luck and get well wishes for you, cofty! Update us as soon as you can!

As for stuff to take, I'd go with the suggestions of toothbrush, books, crosswords... I know in some of the hospitals here in the US, they have DVD players for those who stay more than overnight...if they have that, bring some good movies to occupy your time!
