I saw this "love your neighbor" nonsense as spouted by the religion to be nothing more than emotional blackmail to break down everybody's defenses and open them up to EXPLOITATION!
I wasn't making myself crazy over this and I saw the manipulative personalities there and I was on HIGH alert!
Rabbi Hillel who lived from around 30BC to about 10AD was asked the same question as Jesus supposedly was, I happen to think the story about Jesus is a rip off of the Hillel one.
The good Rabbi simply replied "That which is despicable to you, do not do to your fellowman, that is the whole of the Law, the rest is Commentary, go and learn it."
So, the Rabbi valued the whole of the Torah, and told the questioner to learn all of it, but in his distillation of the Law he did not mention God at all !
No emotional blackmail for the Rabbi, learn the Torah and you would know what "God" was.
