still thinking
Before I had kids of my own I used to dislike the idea of child restraints. But, after looking after a friends 1 1/2 year old twins I learnt how invaluable they can be for keeping children safe...those two were all over the show.
They did manage to wrap themselves around my legs though and trip me up...LOL...not so safe for me.

Never used a leash on any of the kids, although it would have prevented the panic I mentioned above.
Funny we never thought of a leash, because we were on such a tight budget at the DC that we did put a muzzle on them at mealtimes.

I had a leash when I was a toddler.
I think they're great for when you're in the public and you don't want the kid to run about and getting in the way of others.
And it's for their own safety - I was with a relative when her daughter wandered out our sight at a crowded shopping mall. The panic that instantly rises up in you is horrible. Thankfully we found her daughter within a few minutes, but I wouldn't want to have to go through that again!

I used to be extremely judgemental about kids on leashes. Then I had a child. They are fast---incredibly so. My daughter was very active and curious. Exhuberant. Hanging onto her hand frustrated both of us, and if I was distracted for even a second, she was gone. I never used a leash, but would have to chase her everywhere. She would get aggravated and start tugging on my hand---both our hands got sore from the constant friction, and we'd get aggravated with each other. The world is not the horrible place that JW's like to think, but it is still dangerous for toddler that finds that split second out. I've seen little ones break free in parking lots (sooo dangerous) and even stepped in front of them so mom or dad could catch up. I only had one child. I was exhausted. I no longer judge this decision. NC

And here we have the honest words of a good mother who let her child be herself - in safety - without a "leash".
We should all be proud of what NC did.

My mom used to put my sister and I on those stupid leashes for couple conventions in the early 90s or late 80s...it was embarassing and weird. My mom was emotionally and physically abusive though so maybe it was part of her problems that she did that to us.

" We should all be proud of what NC did."
Of course I am proud of NC. I'm a mom of four, three of whom I did not have to use a leash. But I was not foolish to believe that I could get away with not using a leash on my very quick, mischievous, and non-verbal autistic child. My job is to keep him safe, not worrying about what some may think about his being on a leash, the same folks who probably would cluck with disapproval if something happened to my child because he wasn't on said leash.

My mom used one on me when I was little. I was the type of child who never met a stranger and I would go with anyone. My mom was affraid of losing me. I have a picture of me at the old Cleveland Stadium with the leash harness on and being held by someone I don't know. I'm sure my mom knows her because my family was in the background of the picture. I don't have any kids so I have never used one.
