I watch COPS TV show(USA) from time to time. I noticed that some cops intitated traffic stops of people that went to the well known drug houses and they take the buyers to jail because of possession of drugs, but I was wondering why they leave the well known drug houses alone?

I think there are a couple of possibilities.....

    • Kick backs
    • Waiting till they have gathered enough evidence to bring the whole operation down. Sometimes they need to find the sources...that takes time. If they move in too quicky, the whole operation is just relocated.

A traffic stop can be initiated for almost anything...burned out taillight, failure to signal a turn, swerving in traffic, known driver without a license. When asked if they can search the vehicle, many people say yes. Also, drug paraph. is often visible just by looking in the window, the cops then have probable cause to search the vehicle.

A search warrant on a house becomes much more difficult to obtain. Most people do not have drug paraph. sitting in their house window, evidence must be submitted to a judge to substantiate a search warrant.

It boosts their 'arrest' stats, thus making the "war on drugs" appear to be successful, and feeds the prison industry (one of the fastest-growing in the US and Canada).
