Follow @msnbc_us The Alameda County Superior Court jury on Thursday awarded $21 million in punitive damages to the plaintiff, who is now 26 years old. That was on top of the $7 million in compensatory damages it awarded her on Wednesday. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ legal entity, is responsible for the entire punitive damages amount and 40 percent of the compensatory damages, said Rick Simons, attorney for the plaintiff. Sixty percent of the compensatory damages was assessed against Jonathan Kendrick, the man accused of abusing her.

I continue to fail to see any detailed discussion of why the Witnesses were found liable in this case. - BOTR
The elders had a legal duty to protect the victim from harm. They knew Kendrick was a danger and did nothing to protect other members of the congregation. In doing so they were following specific instructions from WTB&TS of NY.

I lived through an almost identical situation with my 11 yr old daughter and the 22 yr old nephew of the congregations, anointed, Super Elder. Fortunately we found out about it before it was too late but when I went to the police with the written evidence it was me that was disciplined by the elders for going to the 'worldly authorities'. It was known to the elders that this creep had already been stalking another elders minor daughter and when he was told to leave her alone he began a harassement campaign of hang up phone calls, vandalizing the family's property, etc. 2 months later he started zeroing in on our family and they knew it. No one said a word of warning. We found out by accident what was about to happen.
PS It ended up with him being a registered sex offender.

I continue to fail to see any detailed discussion of why the Witnesses were found liable in this case. Circumstances had to exist that created liability for the WT.
BOTR, As you may be aware now, the WTS is liable for the same reason that the Catholic Church is liable - they covered up for the perpetrators and had a policy of secrecy.
