Writing an Op-Ed Post for the New York Times

I posted on another thread that the AP report in the NYT was disappinting. My thought is to write to the ombudsman or at least an editor. The article was a joke when held against standard NYT reporting.

So many issues are raised that are applicable to all religions and wider societal concerns. I can see the NYT ignoring Jehovah's Witnesses, a fringe religion. Universal themes are raised. I want to see about writing an op-ed piece. It would take much research and writing. It might be workable if we broken it down into segments and had certain posts, noted for their neutrality and probing views, handling different segments. There are many legal and social issues I would like to address. Posters such as Cedars, Cofty, Barb Anderson, and Blondie, always impress me.

The NYT will not entertain a JW hatchet job. Frankly, I can also see this case as a starting point for a much longer NYT Magazine piece. The work for that would be crushing. If we each took sections, it might be doable. I have a serious NYT addiction of over fifty years. Some publishes pieces are awesome, art works. I do believe we could qualify. What do others think? The NYT preaches to the choir. There is no more singifiant newspaper, though. I feel the time commitment would be worth it.

The easiest response would be a letter to the editor. We could also write letters to the editor of our local papers or blogs.

Two things about the article, I knew about it through my Google Alerts for the JWs. I can't find it on their homepage, have to do a search for it.

Other thing is for some reason the article isn't open for comments like most of their other articles are.

I think this would be incredibly valuable. We might be able to make it a little easier if we share ideas and research.

Best of wishes to everyone in raising the awareness of the NY Times and other news organizations about all dangerous organizations in a balanced and informative manner.

Peace be with you and everyone, who you love,

NYTimes carried the story on page A14 in today's hard copy newspaper, Monday, June 18th. The story was not written by Laurie Goodstein, but it was the AP story that was making the rounds.

Band on the Run, if you want to PM me, we can discuss doing a op-ed.

BOTR --- Great idea you have and I hope you go for it. How exciting and looks like Barbara Anderson is onboard with you --- awesome! I know it would be a lot of work but awareness to humans re/the Watchtowers' devastation on lives (and other cults) is desperately needed. So many intelligent/talented writers on this board you should be able to end any future very vanilla articles re/Watchtower.

I had to say, I love proactive people! Do something about the problem, search for solutions, strategies, and please do not listen to those discouraging energies on the forum whom always seem to never have hope...

I say anything beats gossiping doing nothing on a forum full of able bodied, understandably, vindictive people. I say cease this moment!!!!

The NYT may want to consider that this "fringe religion" packs a lot of punch - far above its seemingly insignificant weight.

It spends a billion hours a year propagating its socially destructive message by door knocking. Their 7 million members also spend an additional 4 billion hours a year preparing for, travelling to, and attending meetings where their propaganda techniques and message are repeatedly drummed in.

The ACLU thinks the WBTS is a hero for abusing and swindling the legal system, in scores of high-level precedent setting cases, most notably based on the appalling lie that they are "defending and legally establishing the good news", whilst instead actually spiritually raping their adherents and associates.

    Fernando,

I've long been a member of the ACLU and even practiced there for a while. The ACLU policy is to focus on the Bill of Rights. I don't know a single lawyer who would find JW's heroic, in general. They have been used by the ACLU as an instrument to push the legal envelope. Rights exist for people we despise. The Skokie case almost closed the ACLU. A bunch of Nazis decided to march in Skokie, Il., a stronghold of refugees liberated from concentration camps. The ACLU receives strong support from Jewish groups, a minority. The ACLU defended the Nazis in getting a parade permit. Once they received the permit, the creeps chickened out and refused to march.

American freedom means our enemies have civil rights, too. There is very little in Witness doctrine or culture that would appeal to a lawyer's sensibilities. It shocks me that the Witnesses have any lawyers. Hard questions and rigourous analysis (not to mention skepticism) are paramount. Witness lawyers must carefully compartmentalize their lives.

Frankly, if I had a personal cases that fit within the ACLU mission, I'd hire a private lawyer.
