Why do abused women stay with their abusive husbands?

They offer eternal life in good health on earth to be reunited with resurrected loved ones..........sound familiar?

They become convinced and are lead on a course that affects them on every level, emotional, psychological, the heart and mind, soul and spirit. From this they are taken captive replacing critical thinking and even biblical thinking with the ways the group wants them to think in. They will often use psychological manipulation and deception to recruit new members. Individuals are not told up front what the group is really about or what will be expected of them if they become members. They find these things out later after they have given them their time and money. So many people never have a chance at a knowledgeable choice. because most of them are encouraged to join as soon as possible without looking into the background or history of the group.

I can remember being told by my mother that my father was not all bad because he paid for our food, housing, clothing (though he complained about it every day), that is, he provided materially. But that did not outweigh the sexual, emotional abuse my siblings and I had to endure for 18 years. Whatever good the WTS may do, it does not outweigh the abuse.

I live in a high-crime urban environment, so I wonder if people see JW's as a refuge from the dangers of the street because the JW's require members to clean up their act. I realize members sometimes live double lives, but I imagine that the general rules of cleanliness, non-violence, etc. are appealing to people in dire circumstances. This could apply to other churches as well, but perhaps the strictness of the JW's and the consequences of getting caught violating the rules might actually be a selling point for some people.

I agree with InterestedOne.

If us kids (born-in) ever complained about anything theocratic my parents would say 'well you have much better parents thanks to Jehovah, if we werent in the truth we would still smoke, swear and drink heavily and Dad would still be in the Navy away most of the year.'

My parents highlighted the 'safe, moral' side of the org. Boy if only that were true.

They forgot the part about the guilt, fear and self esteem problems arising from never being good enough for the org and always coming second to everyone and everything else in the org.

Oh and my non JW parents would never have shunned me because I would have a proper place in their lives as their daughter not as someone they begrudgingly had to raise in a stupid cult.

When I first read the thread's title I couldn't help but think that what many JWs have going for them is an uncanny ability to clean windows and mop floors-just saying!

When I was going in, they were supposed to be the only ones to survive the upcoming destruction. Life without everyone else was supposed to be so much easier, and the scumbags misrepresented Jehovah as satisfying all my desires (including the opposite sex, which every one of the angels is dedicated to keeping out of my life whatever the costs). Once in, it is the hounding, the inertia, and the dangling that the blessings are at the next level up. Publishers are told that they need to auxiliary pious-sneer. Auxiliary pious-sneers are told to regular pious-sneer. All are directed toward Beth Hell. Men are directed at becoming assistant hounders, working up to hounders and hounder-hounders. Of course, Jehovah does nothing to reward them.

Children have it even harder. They are taught helplessness outside the cancer at the earliest age. Their associates are supposed to be so evil, so they avoid them. This programs them to function only within the cancer, trapping them there. If they ever disagree with the Filthful and Disgraceful Slavebugger, they lose their only network and cannot function. Usually, they lack resources to start a new life--so they are trapped.
