I personally prefer the term "authoritarian high-control group".
It's kinda wordy, but IMO, far more accurate than "cult" (and is far less likely to trigger any kind of knee-jerk reaction); I think even the GB, if cornered with clear dictionary definitions of all the component words, would be hard-pressed to deny the label.
BTW, it was the realization that the WTS was an "authoritarian high-control group" that finally helped me finally acknowledge its illegitimacy and solidify my fade.
