It was a smart move for that public speaker to bring this up since the case hit the national news and is being talked about all over the place! Much of the public know about it and any JW who is interested in the news would have heard about it.
It would have looked odd if it were not mentioned. This way the religion can put their own spin on it. Ignoring it would have raised further questions in the minds of already troubled JWs who have enough doubts about the religion.
Personally, I think wt should send a letter every month telling the elders to shut their mouths. Confidentiality may axe.

All apologies @hamsterbait! As InterestedOne pointed out, I did correct myself on my post. It didn't hit me until I got a pm that I misread the date on the BOE letter.
I am sure relevant elders will have letters. If they speak to reporters, for example, it could ruin their appeal.
There is probably no point sending letters to all elders since they don't know the facts of the case other than what a reporter could find out themselves.
