The author of the article makes the comment:

"He has a deep, theological comprehension of the Bible, Making his spiritual meltdown even more unlikely."

On the contrary, I find that the more one learns about the Bible the more likely a crisis of faith becomes.

Not knowing anything about the guy or his show, if he's anything like the high-visibility Xians in the States, allow me to go on the record that it's being driven not so much as a crisis per se, but being forced out to avoid a scandal, with a threat of past indiscretions coming to light, i.e. he was caught in an affair (straight or gay). They're playing it up now, to boost the ratings.

$10 says we'll see the real reason, 1 yr from now.

He was a successful athlete and poster boy for Evangelical Christians in the UK for decades. Being a successful public personality and a practising Christian is rarer in the UK than in the United States.

He lost his faith about 6 years ago - There was no scandal involved at all, just an honest intellectual awakening that faith made no sense to him anymore.

I met him in church in Newcastle about 10 years ago, he was a friend of a friend who was going into C. of E. ministry.

As far as I know I had no part in his spiritual demise.

Could someone make my link clickable, or tell me how to do it on an iPad?

Thanks Cofty, we're you still a believer when you met him?

I reckon he simply had no time to consider his beliefs when he was training all the time. When he retired he started actually thinking about his beliefs, a hostile mental environment for any faith to withstand.

SBF - Yes. My friend Andy had just graduated from Durham seminary and was being initiated in some sense to his new church. He previously attended bible college in Berwick. I can't remember the details but here was a lot of laying on of hands and men in frocks. Andy and his wife were good friends of Jonathan & Mrs Edwards who also attended the service.

I think your analysis of how he lost faith is spot on.

chariklo - I would love to take credit but the timing doesn't add up. Andy our mutual friend must have been wondering why his friends were turning atheist though. I wonder if he is still a christian? I have lost touch.

It's an old story but I didn't know about it. I always find it surprising when somebody of his age loses his religious faith.
