When you left the WTS, how long did it take you to realize that most of the people around you are decent folks, not "worldlies" or "bad association"?

How hard was it for you to accept this reality?

It seems to me that even after realizing TTATT, it often takes a long time to realize the extent to which the organization's indoctrination still governs attitudes and thoughts...

Some years after breaking with the JWs, I realised the need to rediscover the person I was before the Watchtower Madness took hold. Part of that included contacting many of the people I used to be close to.

It was then that the realisation hit - I actually used to know many excellent people who were "Worldlies." Furthermore, these same "Worldlies" were actually better people than many of the JWs that I knew.

I was particularly impressed by the way many of my former friends readily accepted me back:

    - particularly after the way I had attempted to "witness" to them back then, about the imminent "End of the System" and other similar such nonsense. They would have had very good reason to believe that I had taken complete leave of my senses, but obviously no longer held that against me. Quite the opposite (with one only exception) to my JW family.

So, yes, their propaganda about "Worldlies" is just one more WTS lie.

    Bill.

I always knew that some worldly people were "good" and some were "bad". Always played with neighborhood kids and got along well with co workers and school mates. The thing that kept me hemmed in was that I wasn't supposed to form close bonds with them. So it was a relief to leave and start making nonJW friends.

Worldlings I know are much better people than many of the JWs that I know.

    Great question.

I thought I already knew that "worldy" people were really ok well before I left, however I didn't realize just how ok, and in fact superior, they were to JWs until about a year after I left.

I have been amazed to discover so many wonderful people who have offered unconditional friendship since I left. The void has been filled tenfold and I could not possibly be happier. Worldlies are AWESOME!

Realizing that a lot of non witnesses were good hearted, god fearing people too was one of the reasons why I came to realize that what jws taught was bogus.

Very quickly. Anybody leaving the borg should force themselves to get involved in clubs or hobbies or any activity that forces you get to know as many people as possible.

Getting over the "them-and-us" mentality is the single most important thing you must do.

    Great question.

    Brilliant question.

I discovered that many of my friends had thought I'd had a nervous breakdown when the JW madness took hold.

As I had a good number of "worldlies" as friends it did not take me long to expunge any feeling of discomfort with such people, the feeeling of discomfort I used to have when I was a Dubbie, came not from thinking they were evil people in the maw of Satan as the WT would have you believe, but having to constantly watch what I said, not to mention "Meetings" or anything, I never wished to advertise my JWness.

I concur 100% with the Oracle above, worldly people are awesome ! I have experinced love and support through hard times, acts of kindness and consideration all the time, very little of which I got when I was "in".
