King, I asked what this particular quote might have meant to John. I am asking what anyone thinks he means by the OP quote.

And I answered by providing more of his own words, since it seems you want to extract those words out of context of his beliefs (which clearly changed, depending on when you asked him: he himself admits that in the interview I posted).

But ironic, no? Isn't that what Xians often complain about, taking Jesus' words out of context?

You placed me in a position of having to provide evidence where Lennon later seemingly contradicts that statement, which after all, IS his right: no one, let alone me, claims that John Lennon doesn't have a right to change his viewpoints over time (unlike God, who claims infallability and being immutable, non-changing, the same for all time).

I ask what people personally think. Looking forward to more comments.

I like John Lennon but can you imagine that he and Yoko could really "Imagine no possessions. I wonder if you can." I do not think John could "imagine" that. No way. It's a nice thought but not realistic. As he said," I just believe in

me, Yoko and me, and that's reality." Nevertheless, I like his and the Beatles music; listen to it every day by means of Pandora. Personally, I value my possessions. When I can't find my favorite pen or book I tear the house up until

I find them/it. Most of my friends are the same way; don't you dare take their favorite pen, they wiil search heaven and hell to find it! It's their pen!

Sorry, I don't think John is trying to make any point, he's just talking. I would not give any credence to what he said. He was a great songwriter/entertainer, that's all. It's too bad he was killed.

Pan, I agree about cherished possessions. Someone should make a thread about the song Imagine. It means different things to different people. I'd like to know your thoughts on the OP.

Speaking of pens, my sister in law gave me green pen with my first name on it, in gold. It had a little sheath to it that was made from tapestry. It was one of the most cherished gifts I ever received. I am not sure how it went missing from my life, but I have missed it ever since.

It is too bad he was killed. I rather enjoyed his music and musings about life.

''I believe in everything, until it's disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists even it's in your mind. Who's to say that dreams aren't as real as the here and now?'' John Lennon

It has to be remembered that dear old John was heavily into recreational drugs, as were most pop stars then. The right, creative side of the brain would come into play more. Their psychedelic songs and lyrics expressed the way that subjective reality blurred with subjective reality.

Leaving aside Lennon’s personal habits, I think he was expressing a more laid-back approach to how we view the world. We can rule everything out unless we have hard evidence to support it. Or we can rule everything in and see what happens.

It doesn’t mean we actually believe in fairies or that we don’t. Speaking words of wisdom, we can let it be. Let it float. Be prepared for the unexpected to surprise us, delight us or disappoint us. Life lived like this is more exciting and great inventors are often dreamers.

Beautiful, Gladiator. I feel similarly about John's point. I think that after people started burning Beatles records over John's misunderstood musings on the popularity of the Beatles, he did a lot of thinking and soul searching on the concept of belief and reality/unreality.

FlyingHighNow I’m surprised your thread hasn’t got a better response, considering the lengths some meaningless threads reach. It’s a shame when a meaningful thread doesn’t take of. Such is life. Talking of which everyone on this forum is an armchair philosopher. Every time we put forward an opinion belief or observation, we are dipping into our own personal philosophy. Even religion is a philosophy. Our own philosophy is in constant flux. A significant event or experience on any day can subtly alter the course of our philosophy.

“Quite literally, the term "philosophy" means, "love of wisdom." In a broad sense, philosophy is an activity people undertake when they seek to understand fundamental truths about themselves, the world in which they live, and their relationships to the world and to each other. As an academic discipline philosophy is much the same. Those who study philosophy are perpetually engaged in asking, answering, and arguing for their answers to life’s most basic questions. To make such a pursuit more systematic academic philosophy is traditionally divided into major areas of study.”

Lennon was expressing the fact that he had embraced a laid-back, peace is all man, approach to life. The abrupt end to his life suggests that reality is not always negotiable. My personal philosophy is that if you are enjoying your life, sleep well at nigh, and aren’t harming anyone, then you have just about cracked it! I would be interested in hearing what other people view as their philosophy.

What point do you think John trying to make?

Dreams are real in are minds just like spirituality is contained in are minds .

Lennon remember did drugs such as heroin, so not surprising you would say such a thing.

Drugs as we know has the potential to make imaginative thought into perceived reality.

A quote from grandfather .... "All things imagined are possible, so why not imagine only the best things ! "
