BluesBrother, thankyou for your attempt to explain the reason for the miracle. Not long ago, I used to have that approach.
But in this particular case the man with the axe was "one of the sons of the prophets". It was not necessary to convince him of Elisha's has God's spirit or to prepare him to listen to Elisha's message. It was just a convinient way to get the borrowed axe back.
Still, it is a question to believe it or not, but to me it sounds rather strange.
