Christmas Story was filled in a great old neighborhood right by me. The school scenes were shot in this old school that was down the street from my school---I used to play softball there in the summers. And my school marching band was in the movie for like 20 seconds. LOL but they were out until 1am---that's just how it got cut.

The city and environs of Santa Barbara, Ca always has filming of all kinds going on. When I lived there I would drive by shoots all the time. My office was in downtown near the courthouse, which was a favorite of movie companies. I could stand behind the crew while scenes were being shot, with actors like Ros Russell, Douglas Fairbanks, JR. William Shattner, Burl Ives, Vic Morrow, and many others.

The high school in The Breakfast Club is now an office building housing various state government agencies, including the Illinois Department of Revenue. It's in Des Plaines, IL.

Somewhere in LA. Best shot of it was in Blade Runner IMO. Gattaca comes to mind as well.

I can't find a clip, but everybody in Seattle laughs at the scene in Sleepless in Seattle where Meg Ryan watches Tom Hanks take his kid out in the boat. They end up on the beach at Alki point, which is a trip of several miles - through the Lake Washington locks and across a harbor full of commercial traffic. They're out their at sunset which would mean returning at night with no lights. And when she watches them go under the bridge she's going the opposite direction from where their headed. And she'd have to know where they're going to get to the beach, she can't follow the boat. Nice scene, but totally impossible in real life.
The tourist cruises on the lake will still take you past the houseboat Tom Hanks lived on.
And pretty much every other movie set in Seattle starts with a shot of the Space Needle to disguise the fact that the rest of the movie is shot in Vancouver, BC.
