when it comes to masturbation, its something virtually everybody growing up does, it does not harm neither one self nor anybody else (normally, perverted people is a different story) however, with strict rules like in JW, poeple feel guilty and unworthy.
Intended or not, but feeling of guilt will urge poeple to compensate with more field service, donations or whatever...
I agree, sexual desires in a civilzed world need to be controlled, but not condemned like the org does...
So, how do they control it, if not by condemnation? That's the only tool they've got! They can't criminalize it, and throw people into jail for it, or give lashes with a whip (shadows of S&M noted: some people enjoy that kind of thing).
In my book it quickly comes back to personal responsibility, and not blaming others for holding you back from things in life. If people don't want to be subject to tolerating the condemnation of ANY religion, or ANY group, etc, then they should simply not listen to it. JWs don't own people as slaves: the members may THINK of themselves as enslaved, but they're not. As Eleanor Roosevelt said, "no one can make you feel inferior without you giving them permission to do so".
I'm reminded of how an elephant may be raised in restraints, but then grow to be incredibly strong physically and able to easily break free the restraints, if they only tried. They don't, since it never occurs to them that things have might've changed. They accept their fate.
This issue is NOT unique to JWs, BTW: I saw a segment on Jeff Probst Show about a woman who was in a strict orthodox Jewish religion in NYC, where she had to leave everything behind to set her and kids free from a controlling environment. Same story, repeated millions of times... Religions control people, and that's hardly breaking news.
