How important is good spelling?

If you read my post's you may have noticed I'm not the best at spelling.
I think I could be dyslexic, my father and one of my sisters are, and I tend to make the same mistakes.
Also I havent had the need to do much writing since I left school so I'm out of practise.
I believe I'm getting in better, at least I hope so .

Anyway the point is this.I once had a discusson with a brother about spelling. He believed there was a correct absolute standard for spelling words, which was the oxford dictionary.
The way it was spelt there is the way to spell it.
If they changed the spelling you should change.
But I feel things like spelling are not absolute.Of course people need to understand what we write. But I feel small changes to words to make them fit more inline with how we say them would be benifical.
What is the point of having a word spelt a different way to how it is said?

But do you judge poster's intelligence on their spelling?
    I guess we mostly do.
How important to you is the way people spell?

The quality of someone's spelling contributes significantly to the overall impression you get of them from reading their posts. If someone's native language is other than English, spelling and grammar errors are quite understandable. If I am not mistaken, the beloved Fred Hall once admitted that he is not a native English speaker. But if the posts of a native English speaker are filled with errors, it not only detracts from what they are trying to say but also diminishes their overall credibility.

If you can spell dyslexic, I guess you are not one

I do believe that correct spelling and grammar are important, even if I do not always get it right. I deplore the education system that has failed to teach young people how to use our language correctly.

Of course we can be tolerant of those for whom English is not the native language, we get the point O K .
Some posters seem to make a point of posting in deliberately fractured English. What are they trying to prove?

Spelling is important if you are trying to impress people and if you are wanting an article published or in school where you are being graded, in business response it is important.

I think if you have one too many gin & tonics and your fingers are not on the home keys, watch out, you may be the greatest speller on the board and the most intellegent, but you will come off as being stupid.

I am impressed with grammer and sentence puncuation more so than spelling.I am not saying I am good at it, just impressed with it.

I have pretty high expectations of myself in terms of spelling, grammar and punctuation. I guess I take myself too seriously, or have some kind of insecurity that compels me to do it well.

I will sometimes intentionally misspell to make a point, or to joke around.

In an informal or casual setting, I'm inclined to give people the benefit of the doubt; but for business or professional purposes, poor spelling does bother me. Imagine a doctor writing a prescription and misspelling the name of the drug. Sometimes the generic (chemical) names of drugs are similar in spelling but have completely different effects. Dangerous stuff, that. People have died from those kinds of spelling mistakes. (Let's not even go near doctors' penmanship, ok?? )

Read this post, WT U-Turn on "Great Crowd" (May 1,200...

which is suppose to be from the Awake mag.

You will notice several misspelled words at which time you say this could be bogus, because it is suppose to be quoating a mag. it is not scanned or cut and paste therefore could the poster be altering the original article? To make a point the incorrect spelling throws up a warning flag...at lease to me.

That is why spelling is important.

I just type and don't check for errors. I type like 60-70 wpm, so I am bound to make errors and I don't bother to take the time to check back on what I typed. This is not a spelling bee ya know! I figure who cares. I am sick of trying to be perfect. I left those ways when I left the JWs.
