Honestly, I read the first paragraph and burst out laughing. Do they not have a clue that this applies to their own followers??

Have a look. I've included the first article, and am mid-way through transcribing the second one, which I'll finish tomorrow when I come home from work.

    Feel free to comment too!

Should Faith Be Based on Reason?

”There are too many ‘religious’ people who become religious precisely to avoid having to think,” writes the dean of a theological seminary in the United States. “They simply want to accept everything ‘on faith,’” he adds.

The implication is that most people who profess religious faith give little thought to why they believe what they do or to whether there is a reasonable basis for faith. It is no wonder that religion has become a topic that many are reluctant to talk about.

Regrettably, such practices as using religious images and repeating prayers by rote also discourage reasoning. These practices, along with the impressive architecture, elaborate stained-glass windows, and captivating music, more or less define the extent of the religious experience of millions. Though some churches claim that their faith is based on the Bible, their message of ‘believe in Jesus and you will be saved’ makes light of serious Bible study. Others turn to preaching a social or political gospel. What is the result of all this?

Concerning the situation in North America, one religion writer said: “Christianity. . . tends to be superficial, [and] its adherents are poorly educated in the faith.” A pollster even went so far as to describe the United States as “a nation of biblical illiterates.” To be fair, these observations would also be true of other countries where so-called Christianity prevails. Many non-Christian religions likewise discourage reasoning and instead emphasize chants, ritualistic prayers, and various forms of meditation that involve mysticism, rather than logical, constructive thinking.

Yet, in their everyday life, the same people who give little thought to the accuracy or truthfulness of their religious beliefs often think other matters through very carefully. Does it not strike you as odd that the person who does extensive research just to buy a car – which one day will end up on the scrap heap – would say regarding his religion, ‘If it was good enough for my parents, it’s good enough for me’?

If we are truly interested in pleasing God, should we not consider seriously the accuracy of what we believe about him? The apostle Paul spoke of certain religious people of his day who had “a zeal for God; but not according to accurate knowledge.” (Romans 10:2) Such ones could be compared to a hired painter who works hard to paint a house but uses the wrong colors because he fails to listen to the owner’s instructions. The painter may be pleased with his work, but would it be acceptable to the owner?

What is acceptable to God regarding true worship? The Bible answers: “This is fine and acceptable in the sight of our Savior, God, whose will it is that all sorts of men should be saved and come to an accurate knowledge of truth.” (1 Timothy 2:3, 4) Some may feel that it is impossible to find such knowledge among the many religions of today. But think – if it is God’s will that people should come to an accurate knowledge of truth, would he unfairly conceal it from them? Not according to the Bible, which says: “If you search for [God], he will let himself be found by you.” – 1 Chronicles 28:9.

How does God make himself known to those who sincerely search for him? The next article will provide the answer.

When your a dub....you just never apply it to yourself or the Borg

I like this part..."their message of ‘believe in Jesus and you will be saved’ makes light of serious Bible study".

Belief in Jesus and you will be saved IS the message in all the bibles I have checked.

Gumby, you couldn't have put it better.

And Jesus left us with only two laws. Everyone knows what they are. Even the Borg. So why do you reckon that they increase the burden of all their members by loading them up with their bullshit return to the Mosaic law on the grounds that the "great principles" of the law still apply?

And wy do so many fall for it?

    Hi Skully,
Thanks so much for posting this. How does a thinking person even reply to such arrogance?

To be fair, these observations would also be true of other countries where so-called Christianity prevails.
Yes, let's not cheat other countries out of our condemnation as we pronounce idiocy on the Christians in the U.S., that wouldn't be fair would it? To only call U.S. Christians moronic idiots and not call other countries' Christians moronic idiots would be out of harmony with biblical principles. Praise Jehovah....Amen!

When I went to a non-denominational church, I was blown away by the lucidness and scholarship of the conductors and the members. The comments were from the heart and not from rote. The occasional disagreements kept people on their toes and people knew that their comments would be cannon fodder if they tried to pull the manipulating crapola that the WBTS regularly spews unchallenged.

If I died today, I'd die a happy man knowing that I opposed such oppression.

So does reading all that Watchtower Publishing Corporation crapola. Or how about those talk outlines? Was any kind of reasoning used at all by the person giving the talk?

I am so glad Im not a dub anymore.....!

Don't you know that the April 1st issue every year is the April Fools issue?

Yep, every year the Watchtower has some 'screwball' article in that issue.

Note their scrupulous avoidance of specific literature for their support in their assertions. these statements mean nothing. Instead of a nation of biblical illiterates, it seems to me the WTBS is a group of scientific illiterates.

the same people who give little thought to the accuracy or truthfulness of their religious beliefs
This would apply all the more so to the JWs.
Such ones could be compared to a hired painter who works hard to paint a house but uses the wrong colors because he fails to listen to the owner’s instructions. The painter may be pleased with his work, but would it be acceptable to the owner?
Such a simplistic comparison. Can't they come up with any new analogies?

I can just see the dubs using these fine illustrations to the householders.

Excuse me, while i go throw up now . . .

    I really liked this point:

Does it not strike you as odd that the person who does extensive research just to buy a car – which one day will end up on the scrap heap – would say regarding his religion, ‘If it was good enough for my parents, it’s good enough for me’?

The person doing "extensive reasearch just to buy a car" no doubt has learned all the positive and negative features about the car he chooses, compared to all the positive and negative features of the cars he ends up not choosing. Do JWs offer that kind of Bible study? Do they encourage it? Of course they don't! All they want is for you to accept all the positive and glowing reports they give about JWs, and all the negative propaganda they spew about other religions, without examining the other side of the coin. Still, with all the different cars on the market, nobody goes around telling people that their choice of car is "right" or "wrong", but accept that the car they choose is acceptable to the buyer, is within their means, and is suitable for the purpose for which it is going to be used; and even if it isn't, I don't feel any compulsion whatsoever to criticize someone else's choice of vehicle; it's NONE OF MY BUSINESS.

The part about "If it was good enough for my parents, it's good enough for me": all I can say to that is that I hope LOTS of JW children take that advice to heart and examine what they are being taught to just unthinkingly and unquestioningly accept as The Truth™. If the statistics are accurate, I believe that's the trend. Isn't it only one out of every six children of JWs remains a JW? Food for thought, that.

Quoting from the article, (emphasis added:)

If we are truly interested in pleasing God, should we not consider seriously the accuracy of what we believe about him?

What is acceptable to God regarding true worship? The Bible answers: “This is fine and acceptable in the sight of our Saviour, God, whose will it is that all sorts of men should be saved and come to an accurate knowledge of truth.” (1 Timothy 2:3,4)

    ( NWT, I assume.)

The words all sorts of men are not found in the Greek text of the Bible.

    A more accurate translation is:

1Ti 2:4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

ACCURACY! ACCURACY! We serious Bible students demand ACCURACY!

It is said in the Bible that Fathers should provide for their own families and to not be irritating their offspring.

1Ti 3:5 but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God ?,

1Ti 5:8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household , he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Now if the Almighty Father gives these rules for human fathers on earth, would he not be required to abide by those same rules himself. He has allowed 6 billion to be generated on this earth. You could say that he fathered them. Now if he cannot provide for all men; to fulfill his desire for all men to be saved, then he is the greatest failure in the universe and should not be trusted. Ya, Ya, I know, the devil fathered many of them, then who fathered the devil.?

No I cannot believe, that he will wipe off to oblivion six billion to vindicate the desires of an insignificant number of people on earth.

What father would destroy his children so that one or two of them can live?

Somebody does not have an accurate knowledge of the truth, I don’t think it his Him.
