We had quite a collection going back to the original Russell period. My great uncle was an early Bible Student. My father inheirited the collection when my uncle died. The lit stood for repression and emotional and physical abuse. The day my father died, the family made a joint decision to get the books and mags out of the house asap. Not wanting to wait for a reply from JW relatives, my mom called the local KH, which had almost no literature. They came within a few hours.
Before the Internet, I heard some academics on Tv discussing the Witnesses and saying how difficult it was find to certain books. They believe the WT had a systematic program of burning old lit or disposing of it in some manner. One of the scholars was a professor at my university. It would have been nice if the books were devoted to a useful end. Also, a tax deduction would have been nice.
We discussed our dismay as a family. Everyone came to the same conclusion. If we could have had an open fire in the city and burned the books, we would have done it. Getting them out of the house was so important to all of us.
I felt tons lighter when they were removed.
Recently, I purchased the orange Paradise Lost book of my childhood. The book responsible for childhood terror. It is a hoot to read now.
