    Smoldering Wick,

I am very happy to hear about the email from your sister. This may be a real turning point in your relationship with her. I hope so.

In my own case, I had very little contact with my sister for 15 long years. I remember at one point, we were in phone conversation. I asked her if she was talking to me because she had become more liberal, the Society had become more liberal, or because mother was sick. She said it was because mother was sick. The next day, I talked to my mother on the phone. Near the end of the conversation, my mother said, "Judy (my sister) wanted me to tell you that she loves you." I guess my direct question made her think about our relationship. After that, my sister, my wife and I had to help my mother during a tough medical time for my mother. Since then, my sister and I communicate on a regular basis. Regarding religion, we have a don't ask, don't tell policy. It works for us.

I know I wrote a long story, but perhaps, what I wrote can help you in planning out a future with your sister.

I hope for the best for you.

Well...I didn't exactly ask permission. Hillary may smite me for it, but I'm guessin' not. With the advent of the internet, Lords, Gods, and lesser Gods all have to be pretty damn politically correct anymore. The world really is watching. There's never been a better time to be a disciple.

larc: Thanks for responding. Yes, I have seen some JWs & ExJWs come together during family crisis and realize that the separation had been futile. The "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy seems to be an amicable one for both parties. Especially after each has had their say. It's sad that Judy couldn't tell you she loved you directly...has that changed? I have been wondering what the family climate would be if one of our parents should pass away since they are JWs and will have a JW funeral. Part of my reason for not wanting to DA myself or get DF'd was that I didn't want to be shunned during my mother's funeral. I know, and have read of others who were...it's heart breaking. I'm glad to hear that you and your sister still communicate. I'm sorry to hear about your Mom.

    Smoldering Wick,

Yes, Judy does tell me she loves me at the conclusion of many of our phone conversations. We are on very good terms, and that is a blessing. It did take a very long time to get to where we are. Sometimes, there is no quick answer. Sometimes, it takes a long time for things to work out.

One of the frustrating experiences before our reuniting had to do with my sister's occasional calls to my wife. About once a year, she would call my wife about something she could not share with her sisters in the congregation. My wife would give her opinions and a listening ear. After my sister got settled down, not another phone call in a year until her next crisis. I swear, my wife and I had a lot more acceptance than she ever thought of, but that is water over the dam, and not a factor any more, just something we had to deal with years ago.

    Hey Smoldering Wick,

Thank you so much for sharing that happy story with us. It gives some people hope who may be in a similar situation. I have relatives I would dearly love to hook up again with some day...we'll see.

larc: Your sister feeling that she couldn't go to the other JWs in her hall with her problems shows that she realized they would be too judgemental. Funny how that happens. It's good you kept the door open for her.

I know there are some JW relatives that may never speak to us again. I just think there will be a part of us that will always be connected. If we think of them, maybe they'll be thinking about us...hopefully in time, there will be an initiative and a first move.
