I clicked on the book in Amazon to read a bit of it. I was so disturbed by the account of the young boy seeing his father stab his mother and then himself stabbed and "the Voice" told him to pretend his was dead. He survived due to this. The other account of the very young boy forced to work at a job & needing human contact. From what I read it appears "the Voice" is your inner self that seems (per what I've read so far) to be connected to God. Could the higher self be our soul? I am fascinated by this book and am ordering it.

    Violia,

I guess sometimes it could be the Self archetype, or the Freudian superego, or one of perhaps many other types of archetype,

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jungian_archetypes

Jung described archetypal events: birth, death, separation from parents, initiation, marriage, the union of opposites etc.; archetypal figures: great mother, father, child, devil, God, wise old man, wise old woman,Apollo, trickster, [18] hero - not to mention "Oedipus ... the first archetype Freud discovered" [19] or "number ... an archetype of order"; [20] and archetypal motifs: the Apocalypse, the Deluge, the Creation, etc. Although the number of archetypes is limitless, there are a few particularly notable, recurring archetypal images, "the chief among them being" (according to Jung) "the shadow, the Wise Old Man, the child(including the child hero), the mother ... and her counterpart, the maiden, and lastly the anima in man and the animus in woman". [21] Alternately he would speak of "the emergence of certain definite archetypes ... the shadow, the animal, the wise old man, the anima, the animus, the mother, the child". [22] Although five main archetypes were discussed in Jung's writing there are many others. The following are the five most common archetypes. [23]

Frankie, darling, this archetype stuff only goes so far.

    Give it a rest!

Mental illness is not divine, divinity isnt a psychological journey.

My regards to Joseph Campell, Carl Jung et al but goodness!

Theirs a difference between heroic mythologies, biblical blood, and mental illness.

Who decides if the voice you hear is your own mind or god?

What if there's more than one?

    From the Psych Today article Sizmik linked to, the following are the benefits of one person who hears voices;

    • Helping her assess people. Reid says her voices can accurately judge a person's character, which has been essential to starting and ending romantic relationships .
    • Reducing anxiety. She often becomes nervous before speaking at conferences. Her voices force her to breathe and to relax.
    • Providing entertainment. Her voices have different personalities, and Reid enjoys listening to them argue with one another. Sometimes she laughs out loud at their snide comments and running commentary on the outside world.
    • Helping make decisions. Reid says they analyze her options and advise her after reaching "group decisions."
    • Encouraging spirituality . The voices provide a moral compass and warn her when actions may harm her or others.

My first thoughts here are that everything this woman says her voices "do" for her are things everyone does internally whether be it a decision making thought process, self assurance or matters of conscience. Perhaps such people just have the transmit gain in their head cranked up to 11 and the mind creates a voice where most just think. Perhaps it's really all just the same thing and the diff is just a matter of degree.

It was also interesting to note from the article that the majority experienced their voices after severe trauma. Sounds like a defense mechanism the mind may create to survive/deal with the effects.

Yes twitch, and the other thing this person seems to have failed to have recognised about their voice is that it could be WRONG. But I don't think that is a consideration, because the voice seems to be right...therefore.....IT IS.
