Overlapping Generation, Overlapping Instruction

Someone pointed out that it might be handy to compare current teaching on the generations, properly cited. I'm going to quote two sources; the Watchtower magazine of April 2010 and "Reasoning from the Scriptures" published 1989. A Witness to remain in good standing must follow current teachings.

    From the Reasoning book:

Definition: The Bible uses the expression “last days” to refer to the concluding time period leading up to a divinely appointed execution that marks the end of a system of things. The Jewish system with its worship built around the temple in Jerusalem experienced its last days from 33 to 70 C.E. What occurred then was pictorial of what would be experienced in a greatly intensified way and on a global scale at a time when all nations would be facing the execution of judgment decreed by God. The present wicked system of things, which extends worldwide, entered its last days in 1914, and some of the generation alive then will also be on hand to witness its complete end in the “great tribulation.” - Reasoning from the Scriptures (1989), "Last Days", first paragraph

    ...

Luke 21:31, 32: “When you see these things occurring, know that the kingdom of God is near [that is, the time when it will destroy the present wicked world and itself take full charge of earth’s affairs]. Truly I say to you, This generation will by no means pass away until all things occur.” (The “generation” that was alive at the beginning of fulfillment of the sign in 1914 is now well along in years. The time remaining must be very short. World conditions give every indication that this is the case.) Reasoning from the Scriptures (1989), "Last Days", under the heading, "To what do all these events of the 'last days' point?"

    From 2010 Watchtowers:

14 What does this explanation mean to us? Although we cannot measure the exact length of "this generation," we do well to keep in mind several things about the word "generation": It usually refers to people of varying ages whose lives overlap during a particular time period; it is not excessively long; and it has an end. (Ex. 1:6) How, then, are we to understand Jesus? words about "this generation"? He evidently meant that the lives of the anointed who were on hand when the sign began to become evident in 1914 would overlap with the lives of other anointed ones who would see the start of the great tribulation. That generation had a beginning, and it surely will have an end. The fulfillment of the various features of the sign clearly indicate that the tribulation must be near. By maintaining your sense of urgency and keeping on the watch, you show that you are keeping up with advancing light and following the leadings of holy spirit. Mark 13:37." Watchtower 2010 Apr 15 p.10 Holy Spirit?s Role in the Outworking of Jehovah's Purpose

"John Barr made clear that the gathering would not continue indefinitely. He referred to Matthew 24:34, which says: "This generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur." He twice read the comment: "Jesus evidently meant that the lives of the anointed ones who were on hand when the sign began to be evident in 1914 would overlap with the lives of the other anointed ones who would see the start of the great tribulation." We do not know the exact length of "this generation," but it includes these two groups whose lives overlap. Even though the anointed vary in age, those in the two groups constituting the generation are contemporaries during the part of the last days. How comforting it is to know that the younger anointed contemporaries of those older anointed ones who discerned the sign when it became evident beginning in 1914 will not die off before the great tribulation starts!"

""The sons of the kingdom" eagerly await their heavenly reward, but all of us must remain faithful, shining brightly to the end. What a privilege we have to see the collecting of the "wheat" in our time." Watchtower 2010 Jun 15 p.5

I am quoting excerpts from WT articles as cited from a larger article at: http://www.jwfacts.com/watchtower/generation.php

The hundredth anniversary of the start of World War 1 is swiftly approaching. The time indeed has not been short. It is quite obvious that the WTS is fiddling with the generational teaching to try and hang on to that 1914 date. The result is confusion. How could a Witness in good standing ever hope to keep this straight?

It would also be good to keep in mind just how dogmatic the Society used to be with the 1914 generation teaching:

"True, there have been those in times past who predicted an 'end to the world,' even announcing a specific date. Some have gathered groups of people with them and fled to the hills or withdrawn into their houses waiting for the end. Yet, nothing happened. The 'end' did not come. They were guilty of false prophesying. Why? What was missing? Missing was the full measure of evidence required in fulfillment of Bible prophecy. Missing from such people were God's truths and the evidence that he was guiding and using them. But what about today? Today we have the evidence required, all of it [italics theirs]. And it is overwhelming! All the many, many parts of the great sign of the 'last days' are here, together with verifying Bible chronology....Would you still doubt if someone told you that winter was coming very soon? Would you say he was just guessing or merely expressing his own idea? Or would you acknowledge, on the basis of solid evidence, that he knew the facts and was telling you the truth? .... We today have all [italics theirs] the many parts of that sign, nearly forty of them, being fulfilled within the same generation, and we have God's timetable, his 'calendar,' showing that the time has nearly run out for the present unrighteous system of things. This is very different indeed from the situation with whose who proclaimed an 'end to the world' in earlier generations" (Awake!, 10/8/1968, pp. 23-24).
"If you are a young person, you also need to face the fact [definite statement] that you will never grow old [definite expectation] in this present system of things. Why not? Because all the evidence in fulfillment of Bible prophecy indicates that this corrupt system is due to end in a few years. Of the generation that observed the beginning of the "last days" in 1914, Jesus foretold: "This generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur".... Therefore, as a young person, you will never fulfill any career [definite expectation] that this system offers. If you are in high school and thinking about a college education, it means at least four, perhaps even six or eight more years to graduate into a specialized career. But where will this system of things be by that time? It will [definite expectation] be well on the way toward its finish, if not actually gone!" (Awake!, 5/22/1969, p. 15).

It's also good to point out the WT in the mid 90's (sorry not in the mood to look it up right now lol) but that says how it was wrong to attempt to determine what a generation in human days is and shouldn't attempt to try to calculate anything. That 'jehovah's witnesses being over eager' in the past had done that, aka YOUR FAULT!!! and doing so is against the scriptures.

So the 2010 is an apostacy against the truth they stated in the mid 90's by AGAIN putting as new light and recalculating generations

Ahh I looked it up lol....

Eager to see the end of this evil system, Jehovah's people have at times speculated about the time when the "great tribulation" would break out, even tying this to calculations of what is the lifetime of a generation since 1914. However, we "bring a heart of wisdom in," not by speculating about how many years or days make up a generation, but by thinking about how we "count our days" in bringing joyful praise to Jehovah. (Psalm 90:12) Rather than provide a rule for measuring time, the term "generation" as used by Jesus refers principally to contemporary people of a certain historical period, with their identifying characteristics. In line with the above, professor of history Robert Wohl wrote in his book The Generation of 1914: "A historical generation is not defined by its chronological limits . . . It is not a zone of dates." Therefore, in the final fulfillment of Jesus' prophecy today, "this generation" apparently refers to the peoples of earth who see the sign of Christ's presence but fail to mend their ways Is anything to be gained, then, by looking for dates or by speculating about the literal lifetime of a "generation"?... Does our more precise viewpoint on "this generation" mean that Armageddon is further away than we had thought? Not at all! Though we at no time have known the "day and hour," Jehovah God has always known it, and he does not change. (Malachi 3:6) Obviously, the world is sinking further and further toward terminal ruination. The need to keep awake is more critical than it has ever been. Jehovah has revealed to us "the things that must shortly take place," and we should respond with an absorbing sense of urgency." Watchtower 1995 November 1 p.20

EOM, in the spirit of this thread, I'll do my best to keep up on the citations. Is this what you are referring to?

Thanks for this jgnat... This was the beginning of the way out for me.... I needed to see this in black & white... after this it all comes down like a pack of playing cards....

    Jgnat -

The "How comforting" sentence contains 36 words. The majority of the population are incapable of retaining the meaning of the first words even of a 10 word sentence. If a word of three or more syllables appears at the start of a sentence, most people cannot take in the latter part of the sentence.

Jdubs are not known for their thinking or reasoning skills. The Theocrappic Misery School actually fosters reading without any thought as to the meaning of the content being delivered. They will snooze on.

Following that reasoning, hamsterbait, all a current Witness needs to do is keep up on the field service reports, underline the Watchtower and then review the highlighted sections every week with their brethren. As long as they can repeat what they've just read, they are covered.

what about if you went out in the FS with the old "Reasoning" book and explained the "old light" to a RV/householder or interested person?

I guess it all boils down to why a Witness ended up in the WTS in the first place.

    • There are some, I know, that love delving in to the "mysteries" of God. This interpretation must be particularly distressing for them.
    • There are others, like my husband, who enjoy the ready-made fellowship (follow the rules and you are in). He won't care.
    • And there are the born-ins, who I suspect would side-step the question with a householder altogether. After all, what is their alternative? Be cut-off from family?
