Naïve realism, also known as direct realism or common sense realism, is a philosophy of mindrooted in a theory of perception that claims that the senses provide us with direct awareness of the external world. In contrast, some forms of idealism assert that no world exists apart from mind-dependent ideas and some forms of skepticism say we cannot trust our senses. The realist view is that objects are composed of matter, occupy space and have properties, such as size, shape, texture, smell, taste and colour, that are usually perceived correctly. We perceive them as they really are. Objects obey the laws of physics and retain all their properties whether or not there is anyone to observe them. [1]

Naïve realism is known as direct as against indirect or representative realism when its arguments are developed to counter the latter position, also known as epistemological dualism; [2] that our conscious experience is not of the real world but of an internal representation of the world.

    I think I am a naïve realist.

    Sorry.

I come from a more critical realist perspective, overall.

Interesting. I don't think we perceive much of anything as it actually is... because our senses are very limited. Which is why we develop tools to enhance those senses. The better the tools, the more we see. So no, I do not think we perceive reality accurately, with our senses.

Water, when we jump into it, is a fairly direct experience. But, even then, is that enough to really understand water?

What is the point you are making with this thread? Is this going somewhere? Is it connected with something? Or just putting out a random concept for everyone to meditate on?

Do I detect a hint of frustration?

Well I'm not a Niave Realist, probably somewhere closer to an Idealism(idealist?).

I don't think there is a point. This was simply a definition. I think it's how we get through everyday life---see a wall, don't walk into the wall. It's kind of necessary, unless we want to walk out of windows. But scientists measure things differently in different contexts. The article goes on to explain that while we in our normal life of realism express color---science will see it as light waves. A deeper understanding of color, but not necessary in everyday experience.

If there was a point, it was not stated, so there is nothing really to argue or discuss. We just all got to read about a term that may have been one we didn't know.
