We have no way of knowing.
Ray Bradbury dealt with this idea in one of his stories. The characters discover they are in an artificial universe, whose owner has tired of it and decides to smash it.
Philip Jose Farmer also uses this idea - When space travel develops it is discovered that all the quantum effects, relativity, shifting of light are fake to convince us we are in a real universe, when we are actually inside a whole series of universes branching off from each other in infinite regress.
These guys need to become authors, and write entertaining novels, not spout crap, because they have no useful contribution to make in the world of real science.

Forgot to add that quantum switches have been made already - it's on the way...
I know somebody who is involved in the invention of a "quantum "dot"" dont know how it works, but it is cutting edge science.
