The first couple of pages are around Alpine, Texas. Which is where we stopped first for a night's rest before journeying on. The next day, March 11th, which was also my birthday, we had to stay in Terlingua, because it was spring break for many colleges. We ended up in an RV park, which wasn't too bad, there was a bar there called La Kiva, which is a big cave. I drank too much tequila...notice the pic of me coming out of the tent and you can tell. The next day we went to an area of the park down by the Rio Grande called Johnson's Ranch. We did our mycology dissertation that night...all the rocks were very pretty. I had a big stack that I had stared at all night and they weren't quite so fascinating the next day. The following day we went to Boquillas, Mexico, via the International Border Crossing.. You pay a guy to take you across on a john boat for 2 dollars, then they haul you to the town in the back of a truck, or you can ride donkeys up to the bar/restuarant/market area. Within 5 minutes I had located smokey and peyote....very cheap. Drank lots of tequila and cheap beers there. No cops or border patrol at all. We then camped out along the Rio at a place called Solis, which was out worst camp ground. It was right down by the river and we had mosquitos, not to mention the ground is all this super fine dust....it got in everything and in everywhere...I do mean everywhere. The peyote was good, but not too strong..no throwing up or big freak out...very lucid dreamings and the stars were awfully pretty. The next day we went to St. Helena, Mexico for lunch. Best dam Mexican food I've had in a long time! We also purchased a bottle of this liquor made of prarie grassed named Sotol, which cannot be purchased in the U.S., becuase if you drink enough it causes fairly serious hallucinations. After visiting St. Helena, we headed to our last campsite of the trip in the most remote site in the park, named Telephone Canyon. It was the best spot we camped at the whole time, despite the two flat tires we got getting there. The rental car, a Jeep Cherokee, will never be the same. It smelled new when we got it, but after 4 dudes riding in it and no showers all week long, it got to be a bit much. The paint was scratched, had a total of three flat tires, the hood and roof were dented, and it was full of dust when we returned it. That $20.00 loss/damage waiver really paid off! The next day we left Big bend and headed for Austin, where the South X Southwest Music and Film festival was in full swing. Three of us went out and leered at the women and groped crudely for several hours on the strip, where all the festival goers were partying. We had been looking at each other way too long by the time we got to Austin. It was quite fun and a totally different kind of camping.
Bitter, the "No Greasers" sign was to keep the oil field workers from doing their laundry there. Apparently all the oil and stuff messes up the Speed Queens...

...excellent adventure!
Hey Valis!
That's what's so amazing about the net...you post pics of Texas at around 6pm ypour time and some weird guy (me) across the Atlantic is taking a peak, except it's midnight.
Englishman.
Nice pics, Valis.
I made the mistake of going there:
(1) In August. The heat was unbearable, except up in the Chisos.
(2) As a JW. Missed out on Smokey and Mescalito.
Maybe I'll have another chance.
Man, that must've been a helluva trip. How much did it cost you total?
ashi
I think w/hotel rooms, gas, food, and the rental, it cost about $1700 for the four of us. Maybe a little more.
