Fear of Armageddon

My blood is boiling, I hate this religion. My mom is 68 years old and lives in a senior citizen complex. There are a lot of activities and parties and such that the residents participate in. She doesn't have many close friends in the congregation so she has made friends with her neighbors. They invite her to parties but she Does not always go because she's afraid that partying too much will get her killed at arrmegeddon. One of her neighbors told her life is too short and they should enjoy life. But mom is afraid, she said she has been faithful all these years she's not going to mess up now and die at arrmegeddon. I told her to use her brain and think, god is not going to kill her because she went to a party. She ignored me then she said the storms in the northeast are signs of the last days. Sigh, I can't stand the fear this religion causes in people.

Yuck. Not much you can do now. She is programmed for life.

When you're a JW, everything is a sign of the last days!

I hear your frustration and feel your pain.

You tried. The WT programming is strong.

I can imagine how wild and immoral and debauched a party in a senior citizen complex would be. Yardglasses, lines of cocaine being sniffed, orgies, the works.

Tanqueray & Geritol is a big hit at those places.

Hey lostinthought, good on you for caring about the quality of your mom's life - but honestly, she's a big girl now. Don't go turning yourself into her parent quite yet.

As " miserable" as you appear to be saying she is, she'd be even feeling worse if she were talked against her will into attending the social occasions you mention against her perceived "better" judgement. Let's face it - older adults are so vulnerable to so many things - and you don't want to add to the list robbing her of her own capacity for making decisions.

At 68 she hardly is really "old", but she is an individual with the right to make her own decisions, however wrong. My old Mum won't go to anything that is a "worldly" occasion in her JW view, and yet she sits in her apartment alone most of the week, sad.

A great article about this topic: I’M AFRAID OF BEING DESTROYED AT ARMAGEDDON. —What If Jehovah’s Witnesses Are Right After All?

Too much of a plug (for just another fundagelical church) for my taste, TJ.

    Sorry.
