American Elections - From an outsider

I am not huge into politics but I follow the american elections and kind of keep my finger on it. I have my own strong views on SA Politics.

I just want to applaud you, the American people for going about your elections in a very fair, democratic and peaceful manner. It certainly came across very polished and well run. I watched Obama's speech this morning and I wondered if SA would ever have that same feeling of being proudly South African as you guys have of being proudly American and proud of the president you voted for.

I didn't see groups of people clashing violently brandishing weapons of destruction. I didn't see tyres burning. I didn't see people being bullied. Well there was non of that reported.

So well done American people! Hopefully one day SA will be able to hold it's head up proudly when they have their elections.

There was a little clip in the paper: "perhaps if the Americans don't want Barack Obama for president, they'll let us have him instead of Zuma." ... Yes he would be most welcome here.

That's a high compliment. I am very proud of Obama and his family. Here's hoping that our elections will always be this peaceful.

I actually heard similar comments tonight in Canada - that Americans don't know how good they've got it with Obama. I'd certainly trade Stephen Harper in a heartbeat.

SA has come a very long way in a few years - I hold out hope for it.....

Can't leave - it's been 18 years. We've had some positive things, but the truth is that the corruption is so rife and obvious and there is nothing anyone can do about it. The poor are worse off than ever before. There is so much violent crime. I have met people of previously disadvantaged races say that things were better under apartheid, in terms of education, crime, corruption, economy.

I know things will take a while longer, but the potential of this wild beautiful country is there and I do truly love my homeland.
