Nothing wrong with the written word.

There are just too damn many words.

Authors feel they have to write 400 pages of stuff to make it worth occupying a space on the book shelf.

I can read 50,000 words in a minute. I look at the title, and what people say about the book and decide it isn't worth the time.

The older I get the faster I can read.

    Look into Squashed Philosophers. http://sqapo.com/index.htm

Good method scotoma. Toward the end of my book reading mania, at least in fiction, i used read the last part of the last chapter to decide if i would read the rest. I used to have 4 or 5 going at the same time. In nonfiction, i would scan the index for THE KEY chapter, and read that first, and decide from that if the rest was worth the effort.

Readers digest used to have those condensed books. Good idea, on the philisophers.

Didn't the Greek mathematical elite decide to execute one of their own for discovering irrational numbers?

Well, to be fair to Socrates, it was Plato who wrote it. Socrates was the teacher of Plato. The student immortalized the teacher.

That would be the Pythagoreans who were a very interesting group. Pythagoras forbade eating beans. I guess those meetings in close quarters prompted that very practical taboo!

As a sidebar, it was not altogether unusual for the person with the best memory to be the archivist/historian among the Jews in each family.

A good example of such a person was Flavius Josephus. His Antiquities of the Jews was written from memory.

The number 1 is RATIONAL, Outlaw.

    The number phi is IRRATIONAL.

They are arguably the two extremes of their rank.

    It`s still Funny..

The Teacher says the Written word weakens the Mind..

So the admiring Student writes that down..

OK, the number one is irrational to OUTLAW.

Somehow, this makes very good sense.
