I was surprised to hear this today.. poppies are not a big deal in the USA
Remebrance day (also known as Poppy Day or Armistice Day) is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth countries since the end of World War I
to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty.
"In Flanders Fields"
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
~~~ John McCrae ( was Canadian.)
Most all news and sportscastars wear poppies on Nov.11 in Canada
Here is what one American said on the subject...
...".we do have poppies, but they appear in late May, for Memorial Day. They're called "Buddy Poppies" and sold by veterans. They're not as widely worn but they're there. And technically, we have two holidays for veterans -- one in May, commemorating "the ultimate sacrifice," and one in November to commemorate all of them, poppies or not."
How many of you American's here have heard of Poppy Day ?
